A few days ago Microsoft Security Essentials informed me I had a problem, i clicked on "clean computer" to resolve it. Then the computer went black, and all I could see was "Microsoft Corporation" at the bottom of the screen in faded white lettering.

I let the battery run out and rebooted. Upon rebooting, the computer tried a system repair, which failed, so i just started the computer normally. When I installed some antivirus (avg) and tried to run it, the computer shut down. Everytime I tried to run malaware it said "error code 714 (0,9).

Even if I dont run antivirus it shuts down after a while. A few times, when it let me run avg, infections were detected and I got a message asking me did I want to "force removal" and if I clicked yes I would run the risk of "system crash". I havent gotten this message since as it hasnt been letting me run avg.

Also, when I run it in safe mode, avg doesnt work, well it scans but no removal options. I did a system restore to 4 days ago, but it hasn't helped, even though I think this was one day before the first shutdown.

I sound like a fool for having no proper antivirus, but its a long story, Ive learned my lesson the hard way! I did have something installed, but it turned out to be pretty crappy. Everytime I had installed avg, it messed with my firefox on my college connection, but thats all in the past.

Im running windows vista, on a lenovo t400s and any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello and Welcome.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link I'll give you below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a
Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? First Steps
link at the top of each page.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed. I currently have as many open topics as I can effectively handle; this will have you back in queue with the proper logs so an available helper would be able to assist.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.
