Hi Guys,

I have had a nasty virus on my PC for a few days.

The symptoms include
- no browsers will navigate to windows update
- Firefox is redirecting to ad sites (such as stopzilla).
- Generic Host Process intermittently crashing

I have tried malware bytes and it did clean up some infections. My AVG antivirus also picked up some infections, however it appears I am getting reinfected.

So far I have detected and cleaned SHeur3.BVQH and Generic22.IJY.dropper.

I really need some expert advice now, and would be grateful if anyone could help. Thanks for reading.

Hi Amateur,

Thanks for your help on this, I really appreciate it!

I have supplied the log files as directed. Unfortunately the machine locked up after producing the gmer log file. There was some sort of a "hardware failure" due to a "delayed file write". So I have performed the smaller scan. I will retry the larger one should you need it.

The virus is preventing me from postinf the DDS text, so I have attached it in a seperate zip file.

Once again, thanks for the help.

Before we go ahead with the cleaning, let's try this special version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than System drive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply. If you're still unable to post it, attach it.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you still have trouble, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------

If you still have difficulty, run the scan with ONLY the Sections and C drive boxes ticked.

Hi Amateur,

I tried a scan with the special gmer file. It ran for five hours then started to struggle. I had to abort it in the end.

I have done a run with "sections" and "C:\" only. It is attached.

Thanks. You seem to have run TDSSKiller. If so, please post the log it produced. It should be located at the root drive which is typically C:\

For example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.17.0_date_time_log.txt

Just noticed that there is a log even though the installation failed. I have attached it. Thanks for your patience and efforts on my behalf.

Not much there. It didn't run to completion.

Let's forge ahead with Combofix.

=======================

AVG incorrectly targets ComboFix's embedded files. ComboFix will not run with AVG installed. Please uninstall AVG before continuing. You can reinstall it, or another antivirus such as Avira or avast!, after we've used ComboFix to clear the infection.

After uninstalling AVG from the Control Panel, also run the AVG remover from their site.

AVG - Download tools

direct link to the AVG Remover:

https://download.avg.com/filedir/util..._2011_1149.exe

You may also use this tool to uninstall AVG:
https://www.appremover.com/appremover/avg/AppRemover.exe

Instructions:
Using AppRemover — OPSWAT AppRemover

==================

Next, please download ComboFix from one of these locations. Rename it to iexplore before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you don't know how, please look in here:

How to disable your security applications

    How to disable SuperAntiSpyware:
    • Open SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Click on Preferences
    • Click on Real-Time Protection tab
    • Untick Real-Time protection
    • Click on the Hi-Jack Protection tab
    • Under Home Page Protection, uncheck "Protect Home Page from being changed. Changes can only be made here."
    • Click on Close.
    • Close SUPERAntiSpyware

You can re-enable it later when we're done.

    How to disable Windows Defender:
    • Open Windows Defender
    • Click Tools
    • Click General Settings
    • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
    • Uncheck Use Real Time Protection (recommended)
    • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
    • Close Windows Defender

You can re-enable it later when we're done.
    ---------------
  • Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

# Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi Amateur,

I followed your instructions. ComboFix ran to completion with the following deviations from the instructions:-
- I was presented with an error from combofix saying I wasnt connected to the internet and would I kindly do so. To do this I needed to 'repair' my network connection.
- As ComboFix was finishing the explorer shell disappeared (although the process was still running. I terminated the process and started another from task manager. I then replied to this post.

Hi,

I suspect we are dealing with the latest variant of a nasty infection that alters the MBR (Master Boot Record). We can fix that but before we proceed I would like to confirm it with another scanner.
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Save this as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

Make sure all anti virus and anti malware programs are disabled so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe. ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, it pops out with the CF log and this message box:

Clicking OK will begin the auto-upload of the zipped file.

-----------

If you do not get a message box, please do the following:

There should be a file named [4][email protected] with today's date, located here:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine\[4][email protected]

Using the 'Browse' button, please submit it to this site ==> Bleeping Computer - Computer Help and Discussion

Please let me know if you successfully submitted the file and post the RootKitUnhooker log along with the Combofix.txt. Thanks.

Here is the Rootkit Unhooker log.
The combo fix requested an update which I granted. However it then restarted and reponded with "You appear to have a corrupt download. Please download a fresh copy of combo fix. You can close combofix by clicking in the right corner of progress bar".

I will await your instruction.

Thanks for your continued assistance.

Unfortunately my suspicion is confirmed.

ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. earlier. We're going to use that now.

Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
(you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.
If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter

Next type FIXMBR

If it ask if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'

Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.

=======================

After the reboot, please delete the present copy of combofix from your desktop and download a fresh copy (you don't need to rename it this time) and try running it again.

Did you perform the steps to fix the MBR before running combofix?

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Code:

Good job. The file is received. Thank you. How is the computer behaving now?

It's prudent with this type of infection to change all passwords where applicable from a known clean computer, if you do any banking or other financial transactions on this PC, or it should contain any other sensitive information.

If the computer is more stable now, please install this antivirus for the remainder of the cleaning process. Choose the one for Windows XP 32 bit. It doesn't interfere with our tools and it's free. If you like it, you can keep it. If not, you can install the antivirus of your choice later and uninstall this one. Just make sure that you have only one antivirus installed. More does not mean better. On the contrary, it would cause many problems.

===================
  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

===================

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.

It appears to be behaving better now, but I will continue to test more thoroughly. It has really unnerved me this one.

MS essentilas reported that my firewall was off and an unkown error preventing it from starting. However Security Center shows it as running. I will monitor it.

Amateur, I am extremely grateful for your help. I am amazed at your skills and your patience and how you are prepared to put this to use helping me - someone who you have never met. :)

Thanks again.

I am installing MS essentials now, and will continue testing with the other tools mentioned in your post above.

Glad to hear that it's behaving better now. We still have more work to do, but I would like to see the Malawarebytes and ESET scans' results first.
