What are the specs of the computer you're trying to upgrade?

Copy any important documents from the hard drive to another device before starting so you don't lose anything.

You will need a Windows Vista, 7 or 8 DVD. Boot into BIOS and change the boot order to 'CD First' so the computer boots from the Windows disc instead of the hard drive. Insert the Windows disc, then reboot and follow the on-screen instructions to install.

With such a slow CPU and only 1GB RAM, I would stick with XP or switch over to Linux.

If you're sure you want to upgrade to a newer Windows OS, add at least another 1GB and turn off all the eye-candy features to improve performance.
