I'm looking to resurrect my very first PC. It came with Windows Me which I upgraded to XP Home.

Now the issue is the HDD, it's only 20GB....yes, that's right 20 GB. I have an old WD 80 HDD that will fit. I want to do a clean install (if possible) with an ISO or XP (if I can get one). Will my upgrade key work to activate the clean install, without having to jump through hoops and making the dreaded phone call to MS.

To Update, you would need to install ME First and then Upgrade to XP.
If you don't have an Upgrade CD but have a Retail copy of XP, you can install Clean and use the Key came with the disc.
If you don't have a key, Microsoft won't help you because XP is no longer supported. and ME was buried shortly after XP's release.
If you have at least 2GB of RAM, you probably could install Windows 7 32 bit.

Thank you both.

SF -I'll definitely give option 1 a try..but I'll have to spend hours in storage to find all my discs.

TS - That was my back up plan.

If you want XP still, you can get a CD from Ebay or Amazon with an activation key. But you will have a hard time getting a browser and any other software to work.

In case I wasn't clear, if you are thinking of installing ME and upgrading to XP, you would need an ME disc or floppies, and then an Upgrade CD of XP to retain the ME product key. If you have an ISO of XP or Retail CD it will not work.

I think you are all forgetting it is possible to do a full install of XP from update cd as long as you have a coa from an earlier version of Windows.
