OS: Windows XP

I'm trying to repair a PC
It's a Pentium 4 and I believe that it has a Windows XP
the PC is trying to boot, i can see the Boot Progress Bar(Those 'lil white rectangles)

and then i get
“Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM”

"repair the file with a windows setup CD-ROM....and repair"

I booted with a Windows XP installation CD and
I wanted to run a repair installation of Windows XP but made the mistake and typed "R" so I went to the recovery console
But I didn't have any option to choose which Windows installation I want to log ontoDo you think a repair installation will be an easier method to fix it, or I have to go to the recovery console and follow this guide ?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/307545

Also I'm not sure what Windows XP and what Service Pack are installed
Should I get a Windows XP Pro SP3 cd?

My System

Not every XP CD has the Repair option built in like all versions of Vista on up do.
But certainly try that first How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
If that doesn't work, then you can follow this long winded video on how to repair through the Recovery Console.
