if it is bios locked only ibm can tell you and they will need you to prove ownership first

Dai is correct. Most (if not all) laptop manufacturers will require you to ship the laptop off to have the BIOS password reset (unlike a PC, there is no simple way).

not true

we use nothing but lenovo/ibm thinkpads here

go to www.ibm.com and find the instructions on how to remove the CMOS battery

if it is a BIOS password, removing the CMOS battery will clear the password.

If it is a *hard drive* password, there is nothing you can do unless you pay to get it removed by the manufacturer.

What do you mean by hard drive password?

There are very simple (and free) ways of removing or resetting workstation passwords without having to get it removed by the manufacturer.

Unless you mean some sort of hardware password, and not an operating system one.
