Unable to open any programs in my machine

Hello,I have been troubled by this error. I am unable to open any programs in my machine. I have XP as the OS. Please help. When I click on any shortcut on the desktop nothing happens. Not able to open any of the files. When I right click, then give open with It opens. I am not able to open even the Regedit. :(Regards,

As you may know, XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, and has been this way for a few years now. that being said
Do you have a Windows XP CD? If so, put it in, go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will replace any missing or corrupted files on your computer from the CD. If after several minutes it asks you to put the CD in again when it is in already, just press Enter and it will continue on. This means that you have a newer version of the file on your computer then the one on the CD, so it will skip that file. You may have to do this several times.

If your components are as old as your Windows version you probably need a new hard drive.
