Question

Hi!
I was working on my Sister-in-law's computer yesterday and had a strange thing happen. Five or six time in the 4 hours I was using the computer the tower would just power off when I would close a window (no reboot, no hibernate/standby, no blue screen, no error message, no freeze, the thing just instantaneously turned off). It never happened when I was reading, navigating, or using explore, only when I would close a window. It didn't happen every time. The keyboard and screen remained on though the screen went blank of course.

The last time it happened the power would not come back on. It did work after I left. She and I had both noticed that it sounded a little noisy. I am wondering if the fan may be going out of it causing it to overheat. Would that cause something like this to happen?

I was working on it because it is really slow shutting down now (she installed service pack 2). and I was trying to find a way to fix that or work around it. It seems unrelated to me, but I thought I would mention it. She is running XP, and has updated versions of AdAware, AVG and Spybot S&D running. She also has HJT if you think a log would be helpful.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Libs
