I turned on my computer this morning and Windows would not boot; it said a system file was missing or corrupt and couldn't boot. I tried System Recovery, pressing F10, and after a while it sorted the problem out but appeared to leave the computer as new. I checked the hard drive and it showed that I had about 61GB out of 365GB left. I checked the Programs folder and everything was still there. However, my administrator account was gone and I could no longer access anything that I had downloaded on the account and saved to the My Documents folder I had in there. I had a friend who knows about computers take a look at it and he said that the files were no longer there but that the hard drive was still registering them as being there for some reason. To correct the problem he suggested a program called Advance System Care. It fixed some problems just fine but not the main one, that of how to get my hard drive to stop thinking that it only has 61GB of space left. How can I fix this problem so I can get my excess space back?

Thanks in advance.

Just a shot in the dark...Run a disk defrag off the Start/Accessories/system tools/Menu.

If nothing else, you'll be able to "analyze" the HD and "see" where your files are.

I ran a defrag and nothing changed. It just shows that I have 61GB space left.

Try runing a Online cleanup tools of Microsoft & defrag tuneup.

Also, you can download CCleaner and run it.

If still not than you have to delet it manually and run ccleaner registry tool.

Hope it helps.

I tried what you suggest but had no luck. Thanks for the advice, though, as I cleaned up other gunk at least.

Sounds like you did a Factory Recovery. All your files are probably still there, but until you take ownership, the folders will appear to be empty, and will give you an Access Denied message.
If you look under C:\Documents and Settings, do you see your old account folder?
Also check the root of the drive for something like C:\My Backup

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

You can run this little batch file to get a list of all folders you don't have access to, to see which may contain your files:
Copy the text in the following code block into Notepad.
Save it on the desktop as FindAccessDenied.cmd. Be sure to change the Save as Type: box to All Files when saving.
Code:
@Echo Off
Set _File1=%UserProfile%\Desktop\AccessableFolders.txt
Set _File2=%UserProfile%\Desktop\AccessDeniedFolders.txt
If Exist "%_File1%" Del "%_File1%"
If Exist "%_File2%" Del "%_File2%"
Echo.
Echo.Please wait while I scann the drive for inaccessible folders
Echo.This may take several minutes. The file will be opened in Notepad
Echo.when the scan is completed. Accessable folders will be in a file
Echo.named AccessableFolders.txt located on the Desktop.
For /R "C:\" %%I In (.) Do Pushd "%%I" 2>Nul &&(Echo Folder %%I Accessable>>"%_File1%"&PopD) || (Echo Folder %%I Access Denied>>"%_File2%")
Start "" Notepad "%_File2%"
Double click the file to run it. It will create a two files on the Desktop named AccessableFolders.txt and AccessDeniedFolders.txt; this last one will be opened in Notepad when the scan is done.
