Received a blue screen warning yesterday, did not read the fine print but was requesting reboot, I restarted the computer and all seemed fine. That night when logging off the blue scree was there again, I shut down with plans to start looking for causes in am.

In the AM got the warning after two beeps
Primary hard disk drive not found, tried master slave connection but drive was not recognized.

Dell Inspiron 8600 xp service pac 3
No changes made with exception of Mcafee automatic uploads, possible the svchost.exe reading as malware

I plan on trying to reboot with f2 or f12 and auto reset ther bios settings any other ideas will be appreciated

McAfee did actually read the svhost.exe as malware on April 21st 2010 and crippled quite a few machines. Thousands actually, but I believe they have now fixed it. If this is what you suspect may be the cause, then follow this link. However, only do this fix if you are certain.

Here is the trouble shooting guide for Dell.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Sounds like the hard drive may have died. Physically remove it from the laptop, then re-insert it, it may be just a bad connection.
If you have a compatible external enclosure, or the correct cables to connect the drive to another PC, you can see if the drive is recognized on a different system.
Hopefully you have your data backed up, if the drive can't be seen by this system or any other, you'll need a Recovery Company to recover any data.

You can also try running drive diagnostics, try to use the one from the manufacturer of the drive:
Hard Drive Diagnostics:

Seagate/Maxtor
Western Digital
IBM/Hitachi
Fujitsu/Seimens

Free Hard Drive Testing Applications:
HD Tune
HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery)
MHDD Low-level Diagnostics
Bootable Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Floppy or CD Image (works on most drives)
