I'm going to be formatting and reinstalling Windows XP soon but I am confused on the partitions. I have 2 right as of now, NTFS and FAT. When formatting, would I delete both of these partitions and create 2 new NTFS and FAT ones? Then choose to install XP on NTFS or what? Any help is appreciated.

XP installs to one partition. I prefer NTFS because of file allocation and security.

Depending on drive size and personal preference dictates partitions and file structure.

On my XP box I have a 80g with 4 partitions. The PC is on a network that also includes a WIN98 PC. I have 1 10G partition NTFS that has XP and updates. Two other NTFS partitions that contain programs and data and a third partition that is FAT32 used to store temp files and data that I share with other PC's on the network. It is FAT32 since XP can read and write both NTFS and FAT32 but WIN98 can only deal with FAT32.

So if the drive is less than 20G I would recommend 1 NTFS partition. During install of XP you can instruct it to delete existing partitions and then create and format a new one.

Okay I have 40 GB HD. so It would be best to create 2 NTFS and 1 FAT32. Or could I just go 1 ntfs and 1 fat32?

I would use all ntfs, unless you want to network something to a win98 computer.
