Hello,

My daughters computer is very much in need of a complete wipe, however I can not find the disk that came with the system to do this. I have the original key, but no disks. Can I get another copy or download a copy as long as I have my serial number? Also, if I have to change out the motherboard, will that disk work, I have heard that they are tied into the board that came with the system

Thank you

What Brand is the pc? Most of the major OEM's will furnish a replacement installation disc for a nominal to no charge

Hi:

If you change out the MOB, unless it is exact replacement, you will most likely need to buy another copy of the OS.

You could try contacting them, If they will not furnish one. you could borrow an OEM disc that matches your sticker ( Home, Pro or MCE ) and install using your product Key

Thanks, contacted the company and gave them the serial number, but they said they no longer have that xp cd in stock. Guess I need to find someone that has that OEM disc as you suggested and try that.

Thank you

If I understand your response here, If I need to wipe a Sony Vaio that came with XP Home preinstalled, and there are no recovery discs (and a pox on the person that was responsible for that way back when it was new!), but there IS a factory sticker with the XP Home product key on the back of the computer case, I can borrow another XP Home install disc and reinstall with my product key, yes?

A friend has one, and neither one of us wants to use it unless it is considered legal. I thought it would be okay since we have the original product key, we're not trying to install it on a different computer or use the product key on two different computers, etc.

The research I did shows that Sony wants around $120 for a replacement disk.

As long as the version of the installation disc matches the version on the sticket, yes

Correct
