I keep having my keyboard and mouse freeze. I also have 2 external hard drives. I have one heck of a time getting the computer going after it happens. I have to keep turning it off numerous times before I can get it running.
Any ideas?
Thank-you,
Cindy

Have you tried unplugging the external drives to see if it still happens?

Also, try turning off your modem to see if it still happens.

I can get it to work normally if I disconnect one of the external hard drives. Doesn't matter which one. I have had it running since late yesterday morning by disconnecting one external. But I will admit I'm afraid to reboot! Afraid I won't get it going again!

The mouse will just freeze where it is on the screen. I can't get the mouse to move the pointer anywhere. And the keyboard won't respond to anything either.

I had this happen before but I can't remember the fix. It has to do with XP, (I don't know if it's both home and Pro) and external hard drives. I found the answer by Googling at that time. Naturally I can't remember where I found the answer. And dummy me didn't bookmark it.

I'm continuing to try to find it but no luck so far. If I find the answer before we can figure it out, I'll e-mail it to you.
I know I've reformatted since then.

Thank-you,
Cindy

Just a thought but try this. go into the control panel/system settings/ hardware tab/ device manager click on usb controllers and try updating the drivers of each of your ports. reformatting sometimes can lead to any updates being deleted. Worth a shot if you've not tried it.

I tried to update the drivers but no luck in updating them. Got the "you have the most recent....."

I got brave and rebooted. It's working still. But I don't trust it!

I'm guessing that these external drives are USB models.

If so, I wouldn't worry that it's buggy when you have two plugged in.

USB is very handy, but not always the perfect interface.

In USB audio mixers for example, you can't record more than two tracks at a time reliably.

That's just the way it is.

Keep one plugged in at a time, and you'll be fine.

Computer is still running fine with just one external plugged in.
So I'm just going to keep it that way.
Thank-you for all your help.
