Confused

My computer runs Microsoft XP. We have Norton Internet Security 2004 installed on our system as well as XP Service Pack 2.

Upon accessing Microsoft's LiveUpdate site, it told us that we needed to download:

"Microsoft.net framework 1.1 Service Pack 1"

We did. It then told us to restart the computer, so we did.

BUT, when the system started up again, and all our programs loaded, the Norton Antivirus Icon on the bottom bar of the desktop had a big red x going through it.

This means that our Antivirus is disabled. When we go to enable it, we get an error message: "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error 4002,517".

I've been to Symantec's support site, and have followed their instructions on fixing that error. It doesn't work.

Another interesting point: if we disconnect our DSL modem, our AntiVirus is enabled.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Help please!!

Thank you

If you disable the sp2 firewall is the AV enabled?

You have done this suggestion?

Thank you for your suggestion.

Unfortunately, the problem persisted after disabling Microsoft's firewall.

I have emailed Symantec's support site with a detailed description of the problem. They should have it fixed shortly.

I will post the solution for those that are interested.

Cheers,

Morgan

OK, let's get our terms right fist, shall we?

First of all, Microsoft has the Windows Update site, not LiveUpdate. That's Norton.

If Windows Update told you you need .Net 1.1 Sp1, then that means you already had .NET 1.1 so .NET 1.1 sp1 isn't a bad thing to get. Frankly, unless you have an application that NEEDS .NET, don't bother to get it.

Now, it's not uncommon to have Norton crash out like this. It's also not uncommon to hear the sound of silence once the tech-hacks that man the "Customer service center" have fexhausted the list of know fixes to known problems. Frankly, those guys only know what's set in front of them. If you're waiting for a fix from Norton, you'll have to wait until they issue an update to the program... either that and ditch Norton entierly and get yourself an alternitive Antivirus.

Contrary to popular belif, Norotn and McAfee are NOT the only vedors that make quality AntiVirus products.
Me? I use "Avast! 4 Home" or "Avast! 4 Pro" from AWIL software. The home version is freeware, and I have a problem with it.
I used to have Norton and it was nothing but one big headache.
