I have been having a problem with icons disappearing off of the desktop, and then the computer crashing. This only happens after the computer has been running for about 5 days. The first thing I almost always do when I get on my computer is click on Internet Explorer. This is when I will get error messages such as "not enough quota to process this command" or "out of memory". I know it is not the memory, as I am only using about 10% of the hard drive. Then if I click on somethiing else to see if it works, I begin to notice fewer things on my desktop. If I go to shut down right away, I can restart the computer and all is fine for a few days. If I mess around and try to open other programs, eventually I will be left with only 3 or 4 incons on the desktop, and when I click the start menu it comes up blank, and I have to manually shut down the computer. This always happens when I have been away from the computer for a while. If I am on the computer working, it runs fine. The problem starts when I am off of it for a period of time, and begins with my first mouse click. I posted messages in the security section, and have had some help analyzing my system. The techs there see nothing wrong with anything on my system, and referred me to this forum. Any ideas what may be causing this?

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with a Pentium 4 Processor, 512 MB RAM, Windows XP Home with SP2 installed, and 80 GB hard drive.

when the dell screen comes up try hitting "ctrl+alt+d" ("d" meaning the letter d key) You should get a drive diagnostics screen and it will check if your harddrive is bad, it will either pass or fail. take down the info after the scan (if it failed), and if you still have warranty call dell up to get a replacement.

hope this helps

I did the test and got a pass. Something else I noticed: If I log off and back on every couple days, that also solves the problem?
