guys i am on the brink of messing up everything please help me
it all started when i installed a transformation pack for vista.

i basically restarted my pc after reinstalling and everything was fine.
i ran a virus scanner and it spotted some suspicious files, but i also noticed some strange files in my C:\ drive. so i just deleted them not thinking they would be important.
unfortunately for me, when i restarted my pc, i got the message
"error loading operating system"

and i started panicing and didnt know what to do(thank god i have another computer which allowed me to make this post)

anyway i booted from my thw windows xp disk, and went into recovery console.
i then typed chkdsk/r and as soon as i hit enter
it said, windows has encountered one or more unrecoverable errors.

so i typed in, fixmbr, because i thought i might have a problem with the master boot record.

now nothing happens when i restart.
it just shows a blank screen...
what should i do., im begging anyone to help.
i really dont want to lose all my files that ive got(its over 100gb of my stuff)

how can i recover this
anything at all.
please help me!!!

Yikes!
Are you running Vista or XP? (This is the XP forum.)
Which files did you delete?

You can perform a Repair Install . . This is a good guide to doing that:

unfortunatly i dont have the ption of doing that
it doesnt say repair,
all it says is do u wish to install xp on the partition.
and the only partition i can choose is the one with all my files on it, which i dont want to format.

Read the instructions carefully. The install from CD will give you the option to run a repair install. You shouldn't have to lose all your personal files.

If there is no way to get into your OS to backup all of your data, you'll need to move the drive to another PC as the 'slave' and back your data up there. Then move the drive back to 'master' on the other PC and do a clean install of your OS. Unless someone knows a way of accessing USB from DOS on the install disk...

hi,
ok i tried that but bad news
it didnt work.

i plugged in another spare hard disk, and installed xp onto it.
then i booted it up, and that was fine. but when i went to My Computer, i got a fright.
it was saying drive D: the drive im trying to recover is 10mb in size?

basically i think its partitioned or ive partitioned over it by accident.
i believe i am officially screwed.

is there any way of bringing back the files.
for example: if u delete a file from the recyling bin, fair enough u cant see it anymore, but its still on the hard disk, until something overwrites it, if im correct.
and i havent written any new information to my lovely 200g hard disk, so although my 120gb of data is not viewable its still on the surface of the disk,
but i just dont know how i can bring it back?
if anyone can help me, then i would be very grateful, il even pay cash to someone if they manage to help me recover my files. its that important!

I too would look to "getdataback" from www.runtime.org

they have a free scanner; which will let your scan your drive and if you can "see" your files >>>> then pay for the program ($39.00 I believe) and you can restore any files it saw during the free trial scan

you have leanred a hard lesson about backing up your critical data before doing operation which is a major change >>>> migrating to vista with a transformation pack; sure fits the major change rule

I suggest you only focus on data file recovery; it is my belief that you can forget the dream of getting that OS transformation to boot, especially after changing in mid stream to a win xp disk ???? for fix mbr and all that,

after the transformation was complete, it was a "vista" drive then! but a botched transformation

I wish you luck and keep us posted
