I have a Dell Latitude D 600 laptop that was given to me a long time ago. The Laptop originally came with Windows XP Home Edition. I had upgraded it to Windows 7 and it was running really well. Then I did something stupid, I installed Windows 8 on the hard drive and the CPU will not run it. I recently bought a Windows XP Home Edition Disk and installed it. I have the original unlock code, but I was not asked for it. Windows XP did install but I can't setup a network connection to access the internet because the drivers are missing. It appears that Dell still has everything out there, but I need to access the internet to get to Dell. I can download to a thumb drive and install from that, but I don't know what I need to get. Thanks for reading my post. Can anyone help?

As I recall, a lot of Dell computers have a "Service Tag" or some other unique identifier, thus allowing anyone knowing that identifier, regardless of being on the Dell website with the subject/problem computer or not, to download the model-specific drivers. Have you tried this?

My System

Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press Enter. In the Device Manager, any devices with Yellow Flags need to have drivers installed.
You should only download drivers from the computer manufacturers web site.
Go to the Dell Support/Download Drivers site, type in your Service tag# or click on this link Product Support | Dell US download the Chipset (install this first) and the Network drivers and any other drivers you need from the Device Manager and save them to a USB Flash Drive and install them on the troubled computer.
