My friend has a dell P4, definitely outdated but still should be a decent computer. As soon as you restart the computer sits there for sometime before it posts and eventually loads windows. We are talking probably 3-5 min before anything except the cursor _ load on the screen. Any help would be great.

how much ram do you have, there is a setting in the bios that checks every bit of ram, 1 gb will take about 15sec

A computer should never take that long to post. Unfortunately many different hardware problems can cause this problem. In some cases a simple reset of the bios which can be done unplugging the machine and removing the CMOS from the motherboard may solve your problem. If this does not work my recommendation would be to run a memory and a hard drive test (I have provide links to the downloads below). If both memory and hard drive pass you may have a bad motherboard.
