Excuse me if this is the wrong forum, it's unclear which one AVG issues are supposed to go in.

Every day, for the last several days, in the morning my computer has a pop-up advert for AVG 8 or something - the first time I thought "ok they're just letting me know about it" but now I've seen the same thing about 5 times it's getting really annoying. Is there any way to remove it?

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Unfortunately AVG is spamming you to upgrade to the newest version which is 8.0. You do not have to purchase it, it is still free.

I can't find it free anywhere, costs $4.99 per year it seems? I know that's virtually free but it must surely use more resources with that huge list of new things it does, I was happy with 7.5 really, oh well.
