Hello. I just upgrade a fairly old Compaq PC (6 years old) from Windows 98 to XP Home. The machine used to shut off whenever I used "shut down," but now I just get a screen saying that Windows has shutdown and it is safe to turn of the computer. Does anyone know any tweaks that can have to machine shut down by itself? Thanks for any info.

Under power options, look for the APC tab, enable APC there and see if that solves the problem. This tab only appears when you don't have an ACPI compliant BIOS, which I presume a 6 year old machine doesn't have.
