Hi Everyone,

I am new here and would like to get some advice on how to speed up 2 computers that I have that are both running Windows XP. They are both Dell computers, one of which is around 7 years old and the other 4 years. I have done just about everything that I know to try to speed them up both on and offline but nothing seems to help. I have checked to make sure I did not have a virus or malware, removed temporary files, defraged, removed programs that are not used all the time and nothing seems to help.

I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me.

Thanks.

Hi Partsman. ..

I received the Belarc... thank you.

First, some specs on this system:
Code:
Dell Dimension 8100
256mb RAM
XP Pro SP2

BIOS: Dell A02 11/30/2000
Intel Pentium 4 @ 1.40GHz

40gb FAT32 HDD, 19.64gb free
NVIDIA GeForce2 Ultra display adapter

3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller
DHCP - none responded
I found these anti-virus/spyware related products:
Code:
AVG Internet Security Version 8.0.0.159 *

Lavasoft - Ad-Aware Service Version 7,1,0,12 *
Lavasoft AB - Ad-Aware Version 7.1.0.10 *
Lavasoft AB - Update Manager Version 1.0.0.0 *
Lavasoft ThreatWork Version 7.1 *
Ad-Watch

Safer Networking Limited - Secure Shredder Version 1.9.0.0 *
Safer Networking Limited - Spybot - Search & Destroy Version 1, 5, 2, 0 *
Safer Networking Limited - SpyBot-S&D Version 1, 5, 2, 0 *

Microsoft Windows Defender
.

There s/b only 1 anti-virus app installed and I recommend the use of the Windows Firewall only.

I also noticed that you have several system resource intensive applications such as Office 2003, Adobe Acrobat v6, Apple QuickTime and I see you are running IE7.

All of your Windows Updates are in. From the software side of this, 256mb for an XP Pro system running the above mentioned items will cause heavy page file activity slowing this system to a crawl.

You need to upgrade RAM to 512mb or even 1gb. But I don't know how the hardware pieces fit here... I would imagine there is a BIOS update and probably updates as well for non-Microsoft drivers.

Regards. . .
