I’ve blogged a few times about Apple and the MacMalware that has appeared recently. We have now moved to the next stage.
Never ones to miss a trick, the Anti Virus companies have been quick to move. Avast and F-Secure have now released AVs specifically for the Mac. They are not the first – Symantec have had a Mac product for years – it’s just that no-one has ever felt the need to use it. I guess times have changed.
To be fair to Apple, they have built-in protection against this particular baddie and are effectively providing their own AV. Is an AV really needed for a Mac? Since this particular threat can be defended simply by using some commonsense you would think not. So, no need to panic – yet. However, the very fact that malware is now being created specifically for Macs would suggest to me that there will be more to come in the future. The bad guys have now seen that Macs are as good a target as Windows – they will be rubbing their hands in anticipation of excellent profits.
