I need help! Please!
I was infected with the W32/ALemod.f.dll virus and cannot get rid of it. I've tried to do many things suggested by others, but nothing has worked. My desktop does come up. In "blue screen of death." Can you help? Here is my HijackThis log.

It appears as though this log was taken from safe mode. It's important that all future logs are taken from normal mode.
Please do this: Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter" and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so! Also, please post a new HJT log from normal mode.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not (while in Safe Mode) be available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.
I see you have Ewido already. Please update it's definitions, and run a scan where I have placed it in this fix. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. (Not Recommended for XP64). *WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter. The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode. The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. ______________________________ Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Run Cleanup! using the following configuration: 1. Click Options... 2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp! 3. Uncheck the following:
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT Reboot/logoff when prompted. * CleanUp! will not create any backups!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:
______________________________ Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
______________________________ Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection. ______________________________ Once you reboot...... We need to update your Java as it is out of date. The older version is a security risk, and malware writers exploit the weaknesses. Updating Java:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan ** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
Then post the following logs in your next reply... Panda log Hijackthis log Ewido log C:\rapport.txt (log from the tool)

tetonbob,
thank you for helping me out, but I get an error when I try to install the Java update. I can't delete the old Java software, because I can't get to add/remove programs. This is because my desktop is blank. Is there another way to get there? I've got everything else completed except for the Java and the Panda scan. Thank you jp |

You should be able to get to Control Panel from the Start menu...but let's get your desktop back.
At what point in this process did all the icons disappear?

Hi jp -
There's a difference to us between a BSOD (blue screen of death) and your desktop appearing as a blank blue background, which is why I may have misundertood. BSOD comes up as an error message upon boot, or during operation, when Windows has a critical error. If your system boots to Windows, and you can log in, and then all you have is a stable, but blank, blue background, we will do this: Please follow this Guide for restoring your desktop, and let me know how you make out. Also post whatever logs you have at this time, please.

I tried to get my desktop back, I can get the xp background them, but not any icons or the start menu on my desktop. When I rebooted, the them disappeared. Well, it's been nearly a month, so I figured you had formatted or reinstalled by now.
The Ewido scan by itself tells me little. I also need the other scan logs from the original fix I posted if you have them, but at the very least, I need a new HJT log. Did you follow all the instructions for repairing your desktop I linked you to?

Hello again,
good to hear from you! I tried to do another pandascan but it wouldn't let me. As far as the desktop thing goes, I can open the luna.msstyles and I can change the appearance and theme, but when I reboot my computer loses the theme. Not sure if its something Im doing wrong or not! I do not have any icons or start menu on my desktop. Here is the HJT scan: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 9:47:13 PM, on 5/18/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched.exe C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoctrl.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\GEARSec.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcdetect.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mctskshd.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfService.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\OasClnt.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MSKSrvr.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsescn.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsftsn.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE C:\Documents and Settings\Jesse\Desktop\HijackThis.exe O2 - Where is the rapport.txt log?
Let's see if system file checker can find anything wrong... Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.

Are you asked to replace the infected wininet.dll in this process? Do you type 'Y' when asked to?
Let's run this again.... Please delete your current version of SmitfraudFix, and get the most recent version. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files. You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection. The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter". The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Yes, please post a new HJT log as well. Can you now access Add/Remove Programs to do the Java Update steps from earlier?

Excellent. Your HJT log appears clean, and Ewido only came up with cookies earlier when we ran it, but for a complete fix, I'd like to see one online scan. I know you had troubles with Panda before, but try it again, or one of the others below, and post results.
Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
--------------------------------------------------- Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
--------------------------------------------------- Go here and do the BitDefender online virus scan.
