Thankyou thankyou! You know I always wondered how to effect a "Repair Install" - as you have probably guessed I forget and press R for the Repair Console then wonder what to do next! From what I've just read, I guess there's an 'R' too when you go a stage further than this screen? Doh!!
Ok I will undertake the Repair Install tomorrow and then try to recover my files. I will further report in the next few days. I will naturally effect a full system scan using Norton Systemworks 2005 and the downloaditools prog I used before, prior to using any of the recovered files. Well so far so good. The day before yesterday I effected a "Repair Install" and it went well except for a Poufin file error or something - I skipped it and everything then went to plan. I am now in the process of recovering my files deleted by Cleanup and this process is taking a long time. However the results will be worth the time - I'm using my R-Studio NTFS file recovery program - this gets to files which other progs seem not to IMHO.
Things noted so far: - 1. Think my mouse problem is because of duff rechargeable batteries 2. Notepad still doesn't work. Thought this would have been reinstalled by the repair - could someone tell me the correct folder that notepad.exe resides in please - Windows or Windows\system32 - thanks 3. My H:\ EIDE drive is not being recognised by windows - only noticed this yesterday - maybe I dislodged the interface cable when I changed the memory - I will check this out after my file recovery or when I next boot down 4. PC has been on now over 48 hours continuously with no BSOD's 5. Not checked for Windows Updates yet 6. Not done another full system scan yet but I will when file recovery complete, which won't be until well into this week-end 7. Of grave concern is the fact that I'm still getting strange characters when I create or reply to an email in Outlook Express - these characters are: - ¼á Could someone please tell me what is happening here - I was previously protected by Spam Inspector which was integrated to OE, but that seems to be one of the files deleted and a program which needs to be reinstalled. I will get round to it soon but I wonder whether this program is still infected? So mainly very good news, especially as I can use my PC whilst file recovery is underway! However I still need to reinstall the numerous programs currently inoperable because of the "447 file deletion". A mammouth task all in all - so I advise anyone who hasn't got their PC protected by a decent programme such as Norton Antivirus to think again! And of course be careful when using Cleanup. I will report again in due course Paul Last edited by rozel; 05-10-2006 at 12:05 AM. |

Subsequent to my last post, shock horror, I cannot get windows to recognise my EIDE drive H:\ or my to DVD Rom Drives either! In other words all my EIDE drives. The cables have been thoroughly checked and are recognised in the BIOS. There are no exclamation marks present in Device Manager - HELP!!!!!

After re installing chipset software which did not improve things, I uninstalled the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels. I then reintalled them - I've got my Primary back now and Windows can see my DVD Writer but every time I reinstall the Secondary, Windows reports and error and an exclamation mark appears in Device Manager. This Secondary channel hosts my DVD Rom and H:\ Drive. Things are in an impass now until I get this sorted - tomorrow I will try uninstalling the Secondary channel again in safe-mode to see if this helps - any ideas as well as those mentioned above this morning?

Unfortunately, you are slowly leaving my limited spectrum of knowledge. This is fast becoming a hardware issue
but notepad is C:\windows\system32\notepad.exe |

File Recovery continues now - a Yahoo search under "Secondary IDE Channel" revealed a tip - you should uninstall Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120% if you have these (I had them both!) as this springs the Microsoft error described in my last post. D:\ recovered - now to E:\ F:\ G:\ and H:\ - hopefully should be finished by Sunday - I'm running my R-Studio prog whilst I am at work.

Update.............
187Gb recovered so far from 228Gb files deleted. Will probably be able to recover about 13Gb more making 200Gb in all. The other 28Gb are not recoverable. I am going to store my files differently from now on to prevent "temp" folders being deleted but nevertheless I sincerely hope CleanUp will revise their software in future as it seems a bit much when you have to go digging into your registry to change one of it's options which could very easily be accomodated within GUI. Tomorrow, after I complete the recovery, cleanup and defragment my system, I will run a complete system scan using Kaspersky as well as Norton SystemWorks and of course a new Hijackthis log. I will attach the relevant logs in my next and hopefully last post. Cheers Paul |

Well - it's been nearly a month since I last posted and I wanted to thank everyone who helped me resolve my problems. I'm sorry for not posting sooner but my daughter fell ill the very day I was about to post the updated logs but I was caught up with more serious matters.
My problems have now been erradicated and I would like to thank again this forum for your help. Yes I did make a critisism of CleanUp but I think that this has been taken on board. I will be making a belated contribution in appreciation of my thanks. Paul |
