Spyaxe and several other nasties
I was infected by spyaxe and several other pieces of malware and have used several programs to rid myself of them but I wanted to let the experts tell me if I have done all I need to.I ran BitDefender,Spyware Doctor,Trendmicro Online,Adaware, and Microsoft Antispyware. My machine seems to be acting right again but I wanted to post a Highjack This log to be sure. One thing that I cant figure out is the Remote Packet Capture Protocol,I have figured out it is a packet sniffer but not how to get it off my machine so that Highjack This doesnt detect it,I unistalled it from Add/Remove but it still shows up and I dont know how or when it got there. Thanks for any help.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter" and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so! Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Paste the Panda Scan report here together with a new HiJack This log. and the log from SmitfraudFix. |

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.
A. Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware from here: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido. Ewido manual updates. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update. Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. *WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. B. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
C. Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter. The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode. The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. ______________________________ D. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: *Click "Options..." *Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" *Put a check next to the following:
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Once it's finished Cleanup will ask you to logoff/reboot. Please select NO as we will do this later. Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok. ________________________ Delete the following file: C:\WINDOWS\ hh.ico ________________________
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin. ______________________________ E. Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
______________________________ F. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection. ______________________________ G. Reboot your system into Normal mode. ______________________________ H. Then post the following logs in your next reply... Hijackthis log Ewido log C:\rapport.txt (log from the tool) |

I finished the rest of the steps you gave and everything seems to be clean and running fine with one minor thing, when I click on a link in I.E. I usually will have to click several times in order to go back to the page I was on and in the bottom of the window it says "trying to connect to 127.0.0.1"for the first couple of clicks then it finally goes back.I installed I.E. 7 Beta 2 for a spin and it seems to have helped some, but I use Firefox most of the time anyways so no big deal. Was also wondering aboutthe line in my hijackthis log that says "O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing),,i have figured out it has to do with a packet sniffer but the only places I find it are in the registry,,,any problems with it being there?
I wan't to thank you for all the help you've given me in getting back up to speed,,let me know if there's more to go. Here's the last log files for ya. The file that you are questioning is legitimate and should not be disabled.
Further information can be found at http://www.winpcap.org/ Your system is clean and if there are no further problems, you are good to go.
To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. Turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This will create a new Restore Point. It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read TonyKlein's How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them. More information and downloads are available at the following links: Spyware Blaster Spyware Guard IE-Spyad Please let me know if you are happy with the information provided so that we may treat your query as resolved. |
