New.net and WhenU

Hi guys,

Im running a HP Pavilion desktop on XP Home SP2 attached to a wireless ADSL modem, from which I also have a HP ZD8000 laptop connected, running XP Pro SP2.

I've had no problems until now as I regularly scan for viruses and other malware with Adaware, Spybot and HijackThis on both machines.

Unfortunately my wife has infected the laptop thru installing either Bittorrent, or some ridiculous horse theme for windows. Either way, its ended up with New.net and a few others which Adaware and Spybot have removed after several reboots.

Problem now is, the laptop has no net connection whatsoever, the only thing that would connect was Adaware updater.

I trawled thru the forum and found many threads resolving similar issues but none have worked. HT log below:

Hello Jamie and welcome,

Please download the following programs to CD and bring to this infected computer:

Download LSPFix.exe

Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility.

----------------------------------

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:
  • Delete Newsgroup cache
  • Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

------------------------------------------------

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes hinder fixes.

Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • See this link for a tutorial

----------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if it still exists:

New.Net or NewDotNet

------------------------------------------------

Instructions for using LSPFix
  1. Double click on LSPFix.exe to run it.
  2. Once running, you will be required to tick the disclaimer - "I know what I'm doing".
  3. You'll find a windows with 2 panes.
In the left pane which is labeled 'Keep', select all instances of this file:
    • newdotnet.dll or new.net.dll
  4. Then click on the arrow pointing to the right, >>. This will move the entry to the right pane labeled 'Remove'
  5. Click the Finish button to complete the fix.
Only entries similar to newdotnet.dll need to be removed. If you see any other entries in the right pane, move them back to the "Keep" pane & post the filenames to inform me.

------------------------------------------------

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:
  • "Perform action on all infections"
  • Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour. Ewido is compatible with most AV and anti-spyware products, and the free version will continue to be useful as a second anti-malware scanner.

------------------------------------------------

Delete the following folder if it exists:

C:\Program Files\ New.Net (or NewdotNet)

Reboot into Normal Mode.

------------------------------------------------

If you have internet access, perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Please post that log in your next reply along with the Ewido results and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Jamie,

You still cannot connect to the internet with any browsers?
Quote:
I trawled thru the forum and found many threads resolving similar issues but none have worked.
What methods did you try besides Spybot and AdAware?
Did you see anything similar to newdotnet in the LSP fix?
What files are listed on the left in the LSP fix?
I apologize for all the questions, but my next course of action is dependent upon your answers.

Sorry, I should have stated what I'd done already I guess.

Still no net access at all on that machine. Im using the desktop to dload and transfer files. All sharing between the two computers are working (printer and file etc) so that seems OK, just lost the ADSL connection for all functions.

I'd used Ad-aware and Spybot myself to clear the spyware. Plus I'd already removed offending folders found in my initial search.

The problem then seemed to be a changed TCP/IP setting or similar, or worse a corruption. This appears to be a throwoff of removal with Adaware from what I can glean from this and other sources like Microsoft KB.

LSP fix found nothing relating to new.net.
The existing files were:

Thats where Im at. Ive seen references to using winsockfix but Im not sure if thats a last resort or not, I dont want to make it worse.

I was hoping to be able to remove TCP/IP and then re-install it.

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the info. It's time to try WinsockFix.

Download WinsockFix and extract all files. Double click on WinsockFix.exe to run it.

------------------------------

If you still do not have access to the internet, please do the following:

Click Start>Control Panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on Properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

-----------------------------------

Next, Click Start >Run and type cmd in the open field and hit OK.

Now type ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)
then hit [enter]
*Type exit and [Enter]

If you can access the internet, please run the online scan at Panda.

Thanks for your patience Ried.

Ran Winsock, it said it repaired and rebooted.

The settings for the connection were already set as you posted.

Flushed DNS.

Still no connection.

The laptop is connected via wireless btw. I might try a direct LAN connection until I get your next post :) Can't hurt.

No luck there, though I didn't really expect any. :/

Theres quite a bit of debate about this on forums all over the net. Hot issue.

I did find this, although I'm loathe to trust the people who are the cause of all my heartache to begin with......

OK, don't ask me how, but since my last post I have done nothing to the machine but while sitting at the desktop I heard the laptop beep. On checking, it was a McAfee update that had downloaded! Then another right on the back of that. So I jumped into Firefox and my homepage came straight up :)

So somehow, not sure exactly how, it has resolved itself. Im hoping it doesnt disappear just as quickly :)

So Im sending this from the laptop, finally :)

Thanks for all your help Ried, you're a lifesaver (and I hardly have any hair left)

I'll run the online Panda scan anyway, but hopefully won't be seeing you ;)

Thanks again,
Jamie

Well, that is interesting.

Yes, please run the online scan so we can see if anything is still lurking. Post the results along with a new HijackThis log.

Looking real good, Baldric.

Just a couple minor details to take care of.

Close any open programs and browsers.

Run a scan with HijackThis. 'Check' the following entry, then click 'Fix Checked':

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

------------------------------

Clear Mozilla Firefox cookies:
Open the Mozilla Browser, (you do not need to be online to do this) Click Tools>Options>Privacy>Cookies>Clear

**********************************

Your logs are clean. Please continue with these final instructions and helpful links.

Enable Windows Auto Update
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
*Under Settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from previous restore points.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

More information and free downloads are available at the following links:

Download SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items .

Download Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

Download IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, and save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
