CPU/Internet running super slow

My whole computer and internet has been running ungodly slow. Also, whenever I right click(say to go to properties on a file) if i am in a program, that program will have an error, or if it is on my desktop or in a document, then windows explorer has an error. I don't know what to do.

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please delete your current version and download HijackThis. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Post a new log for review.

IMPORTANT!:

Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2) (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system. At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it’s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from..

Thank you for your cooperation.

Hello and welcome to TSF

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.

DOWNLOADS - EWIDO

Download Ewido Security Suite

1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

2. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Close Ewido.

DOWNLOAD - CLEANUP!

Please download Cleanup! or use this (Alternate Link) if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

SAFE MODE

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click “Kill process” for each one (If they still exist)(You must kill them one at a time).

ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if they exist):

WindUpdates

FIXES WITH HIJACK THIS

  1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.

Paste the Panda Scan report here together with a new HiJack This log. and Ewido's log.

I CANNOT STRESS THE BELOW ENOUGH:

I need you to upgrade to SP1 first. Please assist me in helping you.

You may download SP1 directly from here > http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...p1a_en_x86.exe

Please post a fresh HJT log after you have done so - from version 1.99.1

I already have SP1a, but you still want me to get SP1?

Also, that link you posted is not working for me, and I thought it was just because I was on firefox but it does not work on IE either.

Your Hijack This log indicates that you have an unpatched system.

Please use this link to download SP1a.

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...p1a_en_x86.exe

Post a new Hijack This log when you have done so - from version 1.99.1.

Logs taken with v1.98.2 do not tell us what we need to know. To avoid anymore confusion, please delete your older copy of Hijackthis. It's located right on your Desktop.

Use version 1.99.1 instead.
It can be found here > C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

I did that and it does not say which service pack or anything like that. Only "Microsoft Windows Version 5.1 (Build 2600...........) and so on.

Also, on an unrelated topic but related matter, I seem to have a Trojan called MagicControl... so if you know anything about that and removing it, that'd be good too. Thanks.

You still do not have SP1a installed.

Have you clicked the executable that you get when you download it and then rebooted?

You need to do that or it will not install.

Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
  • Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
  • Leave the default settings. If you change them, the fix will fail.
  • Make sure 'Launch LQfix' is checked. After clicking finish in the install, the fix will start.
  • Follow the prompts on the screen.
  • Your system will reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background

Please download FixSSK.reg.

Double click it when it is downloaded and answer Yes to merge it with your registry.

----------------------

Click Start > Run and type:

regsvr32 /u occache.dll

----------------------

Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ csloa.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ msehek.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ msfdje.gif

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ pdfrpt00.dll

----------------------

Click Start > Run and type:

regsvr32 occache.dll

---------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with

Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post the Kaspersky log and a new Hijack This log here.

My computer is running really well at this point. I thank you for all of your help. I just have one more question, and I might make another thread about it if I have to; Lets say for instance I am in Winamp, and I am browsing for a music file. If I right-click the music file to go to properties, then I will get an error message saying Winamp is closing. Now if I do the same thing on a file in My Documents, then Windows Explorer itself will have an error and I'll end up having to restart. I can't even make new folders because it gives me the error message.

Please post your problem in the Windows XP section of the site.

Your log is clean.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

Turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read TonyKlein's How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

More information and downloads are available at the following links:
