runner error

Pops up on my screen every few seconds constantly:
Runner Error
Runner file name (fspex.exe) lacks a '-' (the app id separator)

This started after running "F-Secure" anti-virus free trial for a month.
At the end of the month, option to buy or un-install. I let it un-install itself as reccomended. It looked like it un-installed OK but left junk all over. Tried to remove in Add/Remove in CP and its there but won't remove. Tried all your reccomendations before posting.
Thanks,
Jorg

My System

Blog Entries: 10
Hi austinjorg and welcome to TSF.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix.

AdwareAlert – This programme was known as rogueware in the past. Rogue or Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection. This programme has allegedly changed but I would still recommend uninstalling it. There are numerous well known and highly regarded programmes that will do a better job, and I will provide some details when your system is clean. I have included AdwareAlert in this fix. If, for any reason, you wish to retain this programme then ignore any items relating to AdwareAlert.

Show Hidden Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Downloads
Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later.

Download Ewido Anti-Malware
  • Install Ewido Anti-Malware
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido

You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Run CleanUp!
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows:

Click Options
Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp!
Check the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Uncheck the following :
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and reboot when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these BEFORE running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (dependent on your system this may be F5 or another key)
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Uninstall Programmes
Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if present):

AdwareAlert
ViewMgr

ViewMgr.exe is an advertising program by Viewpoint. This process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's.

HijackThis Entries
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot

O23 - Service: F-Secure Gatekeeper Handler Starter - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\F-Secure Anti-Virus\Anti-Virus\fsgk32st.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: fsbwsys - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\F-Secure Anti-Virus\backweb\4476822\program\fsbwsys.exe (file missing)

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

File Deletions
Delete the following Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert

Run Ewido
Run Ewido with it's updated definitions (...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save Report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

NOTE: Ewido scan will require at least an hour.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Online Scan

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner.

1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. *Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Logs required
Ewido Log
Panda Log
HijackThis Log

Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems.

Everything ran just as you said. There was no task for files\viewpoint\viewpoint manager\Viewmgr.exe in the hijack this report after you had me uninstall the program at the bottom of page 7. I think this is due to an extra boot to get rid of them and then booted again to get back to safe mode.
Here are coies of the 3 logs:

I assume you wanted to run Ewido is safe mode. The cleanup deleted a lot.
I hope you can read the logs ok, but the problem is still occurring as before!

Runner Error
Runner file name (fspex.exe) lacks a '-' (the app id separator)

Thank You and I look forward to your next response!

EEK! Runner Error

Just realized from reading other threads that I'm running SP2. Do you want me to back out of that? I've been running SP2 successfully since M-Soft pushed it out but don't know if I need to go lower for diagnostics reasons.
Let me know.
Thanks,
Jorg

Hi Jorg

Just leave SP2 - you’ve had it long enough and it won’t affect anything we do here. And yes, Ewido is best run in Safe Mode.

That error relates to an F-Secure file. First check your Program Files folder and make sure any folder related to F-Secure has been deleted. Then go to Start > Search and try and find the file, then delete it. Note: you may have to boot to Safe Mode to delete the file.

Clear your IE cookies. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab > under Temporary files, click on Delete Cookies

Delete the following Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Favorites\Health

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended
Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log.

First of all the machine is running great, I can't thank you enough! I would like you to reccomend a good anti-virus. I've tried them all and they seem to work pretty good. But some have got me in trouble, like "F-Secure" and "Symantec". You can still see some junk these programs left. "Symantec" had some real problems with downloading to machines and were no help. I've also heard with a good anti-spyware you don't really need anti-virus, I don't buy that one. My Daughter is temporarily using this machine until I get hers built. Thats why you see yahoo, aol etc.. I be doing some serious cleaning up and also using the tools you have introduced to me. I was already familiar with "Ad-Aware" but not the "SE" or add-ons. Maybe you have a favorite that does it all.
I would really like to hear what you think. Thank you very much and I will be donating to your wonderful cause!
Again, I look forward to your next response!
Thank You ver much,
Jorg

EEK! Runner error

Iain,
I just noticed that "Microsoft Security Center" thinks I am still running an up to date version of "F-Secure". Since I posted last I did find some old references and got rid of them, re-booted but it still thinks I am running "F-Secure" for anti-virus software. I guess I'm not too worried, I'm sure its getting its info from the registry but I just want to be sure when I do decide on a anti-virus that I won't have any problems installing and taking affect in security center. Sorry I missed this earlier. You may have found it anyway in the logs. Other than that the machine seems to be running fine. Let me know what you think I should do about anti-virus. I'm still running "spybot" and "Microsoft Anti-Spyware".
Thanks,
Jorg

Hi again jorg (or is that Mike? )

It’s the Registry entries that MS is seeing. Download the attached zip file and extract the file “austinjorg.reg” to your desktop. Then double click on “austinjorg.reg” and say ‘Yes’ to any prompts and allow it to merge into the Registry.

Then post a fresh HijackThis Log and we’ll see if that’s taken out the F-Secure entries. Once that happens I’ll suggest various security programmes for you. None of my suggestions will conflict with MS.

EEK! runner error

Iain, Made the 1 change you created for me and it changed the key in the registry but Security still says I'm protected by the updated and latest version of F-Secure. As you know F-Secure and associated files are all over the registry. Other than that the machine is running great and much faster. I am probably like millions of others that wish everthing not needed in the registry was gone .Let me know if you need anything else. Do you think when I install whatever anti-virus software I go with (your recommendations), it would just change it? Probably asking for more problems...huh?
Oh well, once again, at your mercy!
Anyway here is the Hi-Jack log and I look forward to hearing back!
Thanks! (It is Mike, but my friends call me Jorg...so please call me Jorg!!!

Hi Jorg

Ok, there are a few possibilities here. Did you uninstall via Control Panel? Have a look and see if there is still an entry for F-Secure and try uninstalling again, if there is. We could end up re-installing and then uninstalling. I need to see how many F-Secure services are definitely still running, so try this:

Download this file from here:

Getservices.zip - Get list of XP/2000/NT Services

Extract the file to the C:\ drive. Then navigate to the C:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

This will let me see the running services. Then we'll take it from there.

Wink runner error

Iain,
I never could get F-Secure to uninstall with add/remove in control panel. The only way was with it's own uninstall. After I thought I had it all off (before I contacted you) I found what looked to be a fully installed F-secure (probably never removed) and it still would not uninstall with Control Panel. Weird!!

Anyway here is the getservice log:
(hope you can read it ok)

Hi Jorg

Thanks for that – as you may have noticed, there are 5 services for FS. I need you to do the following:

Click Start->Run - type SERVICES.MSC & then click on the OK button
  • Locate the service - BackWeb Plug-in - 4476822
  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Stop the service by using the Stop button.
  • Change the Startup type to Disabled & then click on the OK button
  • Then start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools...> Delete an NT service...
  • In the popup box that appears, type in BackWeb Plug-in – 4476822 & then click on the OK button
.

Now repeat those steps for these services:

F-Secure Gatekeeper Handler Starter
fsbwsys
FSDFWD
FSMA

That will delete each service.

Does the F-Secure folder in Program Files still exist?

Let me know how that goes and post back with a fresh HijackThis log.

Cool runner error

Hi Iain, ran those as you asked. Took me a second to find the short names of a couple until I realized you were supplying them, just had to get the right ones. No, there is no and has not been an F-Secure folder in Programs for a couple of days. We got rid of that in earlier steps. I think I got all the services but it still says I'm protected and up to date with "F-Secure 2005 5.10".
Here is the latest Hi Jack

Jorg

We’ve stopped all those services; it’s just the Registry we need to clean up. Let’s try CCleaner.

Please download CCleaner and install it.

Run CCleaner.
  • On the left, click 'Issues'.
  • Click 'Scan For Issues'.
  • Ccleaner will check for issues in the registry and list them. You can monitor it's progress by the green percentage bar.*
  • Once it has reached 100%. Click 'Fix Selected Issues...'.
*At this point CCleaner will ask if you want to back up the registry. Say ‘Yes’ and save the back up file in the folder you installed CCleaner*
  • CCleaner will give you a description of each 'issue' found. Look for only F-Secure related entries.
  • Remove the checkmark from all other entries and then click Fix
  • Repeat just in case it misses any
  • Exit CCleaner.

Let me know if that helps.

Idea runner error

Iain, hate to say it but no help. I ran that, the cleaner and even took a chance and took other references to f-secure out. Still no help!
Here is a clean log.

Install Grisoft AVG now and see if Windows will make that the default antivirus program.

You don't seem to have a firewall program installed. Using a firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Download a free one at ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com. There is a free version for personal use.

Is the error message still coming up?

Right click on this link http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/RegSrch.vbs and choose 'Save As'. Save it somewhere. Now run that program and do a search for these files (if more than one, make sure to search and save them separately):

f-secure

Save the file/files and post the results in the forum.

EEK! runner error

Installed Grisoft AVG and the antivirus portion says the folowing:
Windows found more than one antivirus program on this computer and at least one reports that it is currently up to date and virus scanning is on.
There is no error message, this is the information you receive when you click on the "ON" button for Viruscan in security Center in Control Panel
Does not give a name of any software at all!

Hi again

Download the attached zip file and extract the file “jorg.reg” to your desktop. Then double click on “jorg.reg” and say ‘Yes’ to any prompts and allow it to merge into the Registry.

Then see if AVG is now showing as the default.

runner error

I now have installed the AVG-Free version and is (supposedly) the only anti-virus running. Ran the "jorg" registry editor and it still thinks 2 anti-virus software packages are running and up to date.
Cleaned off zone-alarm and everything else I could find. Also ran the cleanup program that checks for issues in the registry. As you can see, it still refers to f-secure 72 times in the registry...just don't know which ones to remove.
thanks-look forward to hearing from you again soon!
