Hijack this log (IE URL Address bar not working)

Hi I've posted in my other thread about my Internet Explorer 6.0 address bar...it doesn't go to a site when I type it in there and press enter or hit "go" anymore...however I can still go to pages and browse like normal...I have google as my homepage and If I search from there I can still go on the net etc. Also whenever I type something in the URL bar and hit enter, and I open the "task manager" there is verclsid.exethat is in the processes...one for everytime I try to go to a site.

I ran Adaware, Spybot, CW Shredder, did some online scans and not very many things popped up...only one adware and infected file but they were fixed...the problem is still happening with the address bar not working though..

I have ran HijackThis and here is the log:

Thank you sir!

Just a little bit more info...I dunno if it matters but....while I ran spybot...it did detect registry changes with "Wild Tangent" and "Windows Security System: FirewallDisableNotify" and "Windows Security System: AntivirusDisableNotify" I set it so it would fix these changes and I am guessing it did...

Mam if you don't mind lol

While Spybot et al are good tools can I ask you not run anymore unless asked to so. thanks

Also could you check you don't have msconfig enabled as this may prevent us seeing everything.

Go to Start>Run type msconfig and press Enter.

Select Normal Startup - Load all Device Drivers and Services

Reboot and post a new log.

Hi scottv

That's no problem, the sticky is designed to remove a lot prior to you posting a log. Once you post a log it can take a while to analyse it and the fix we then prescribe won't be accurate if you continue to run removal tools. This wastes time on both our parts.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you while carrying out the following instructions

Your installed Firewall has disabled Windows XP Firewall, which is normal. Spybot detecting this entry...HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify!=dword:0 is fine. Set it up to ignore the entry as it's an issue with Spybot and the entry is correct.

In order to do so please right click the entry to expand the find, then click on the sub-find, then right click... ’exclude this detection from further searches'. That way, should any other part of security center settings change, Spybot will still detect those.

Please see this link ( http://www.spybot.info/en/faq/46.html) at Safer Networking, Spybot's home, regarding these finds.

Your Java is outdated please follow these steps to update it
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It may have a coffee cup icon next to it.
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

verclsid.exe is a legit Microsoft process included in the latest Security Update

There have been reports that HP Share to Web and verclsid.exe have been causing conflicts. Microsoft are working on an update at this time. If you have further problems then you could
  1. Disable HP Share to Web

    OR

  2. Uninstall the Security Update (908531) via add/remove programs until the new update is released

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entry

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Delete the following File indicated in RED if it still exists.

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Paste the Panda Scan report here together with a new HiJack This log.

Just another small detail. When I type a site into the URL bar...it doesn't go and the "verclsid.exe" pops up for when I do that....If I end that particular "verclsid.exe" process....it WILL go to the site that I have typed in....

Hi there scottv

No probs I hope you had a nice weekend

Yeah as I explained verclsid is conflicting with your HP Share to Web. Either disable Share to Web or uninstall the latest Windows Security Update(908531). Microsoft are working on a fix for this conflict.

Please print this page or copy it to Notepad in order to assist you while carrying out the following instructions.

Please download Cleanup! or use this (Alternate Link) if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later.

Download fl.zip
Extract the contents to a new folder on Desktop.
Within the folder, locate & double-click fl.bat.
It should produce a report at c:\findlop.txt. Post the contents of the report in your next reply.

Open HijackThis and click Open the Misc Tools section, under System Tools click Open uninstall manager... and click Save list. Save it to HijackThis directory and post the entire contents of uninstall_list.txt here.

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.

Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
  • Downloaded Applets
  • Downloaded Applications
  • Other Files

Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders in BLUE(If they still exist)

C:\WINDOWS\ounist.exe
C:\WINDOWS\pludll.exe
C:\WINDOWS\webdir.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\curb second platform army

Empty the contents of the following Folders(Do not delete the folder)

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Cookies
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temp

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows:

Click Options
Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp!

Check the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Uncheck the following :
  • Scan local drives for temporary files

Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and reboot when prompted.

Reboot to Normal Mode

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with

Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended Scan
    • Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Okay, I couldnt find where to disable HP SharetoWeb so I just uninstalled it from add/remove programs and the Internet Explorer URL bar works again!

HOWEVER, My MSNMessenger seems to have the error window pop up and it closes now after a few minutes...I dunno if it's related to me doing this but I just noticed it...did the restart and same thing...

Anyways, I then went and did what you said on the list next.... Here are the logs...

OK scottv

I'm sorry to be nuisance but there's a fix for the HP Share to Web - verclsid.exe conflict now. If you would like to re-install it then do the following in order to add HP Share to Web to a "white list" so that verclsid.exe doesn't scan it:
  1. Log on to the computer with an account with administrator privileges.
  2. Click the Start button and then click Run.
  3. Type Regedit and then click OK.
  4. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup.
  5. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached
  6. Right-click "Cached", point to New, click "DWORD Value", and then enter:(use copy/paste)

    {A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401
  7. Set the Data of this value to 1
  8. Close the Registry Editor.
  9. Use Task Manager to end the Verclsid.exe process or restart the computer.

Run MSN setup and choose Repair install. Does this help???

Delete the following Folder(If it still exists)

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\curb second platform army

Please use Symantec's guide to remove the Norton Quarantine files.

If all goes according to instruction, and you have no further issues then you should be good to go.

Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE - (System Volume Information folder)
Go to Start >> Run - type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter
    • Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
    • Click Apply
Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click OK

  2. DISABLE THE VIEWING OF SYSTEM FILES
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
    • Untick - Show hidden files and folder
    • Tick - Hide file extensions for known types
    • Tick - Hide protected operating system files
Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

  3. SECURING INTERNET EXPLORER
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    • Select the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Select Custom Level .
        • Change 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to Prompt
        • Change 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to Disable
        • Change 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable
        • Change 'Installation of desktop items' to Prompt
        • Change 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to Prompt
        • Change 'Navigate sub-frames across different domains' to Prompt
        • When all these changes have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Select OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  4. ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  5. FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here.

  6. Microsoft Windows Update
Visit windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  7. SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  8. AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • Google Toolbar - Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
