About:Blank
I was wondering what "Digital Line Detect" meant and why it was in my startup on my Dell computer. So I put "Digital Line Detect" in Google search, clicked on a listed website and about:blank appeared. My internet explorer locked up, just a blank page was displayed.
Restarting my computer does solve the problem, but I've a feeling this is only a temporary solution?? Any help most welcome. I've run HijackThis :- Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 22:22:44, on 11/04/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfTray.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ntl\BROADB~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\mcvsshld.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\oasclnt.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsescn.exe C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\mps\mscifapp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MskAgent.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\Surround Mixer\CTSysVol.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\DVDAudio\CTDVDDet.EXE C:\WINDOWS\CTHELPER.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Promotions\HPpromo.exe C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Sky Alerts\skinker.exe C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe C:\Program Files\BBC News alerts\skinkers.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee QuickClean\PlgUni.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTsvcCDA.exe C:\Program Files\YourWare Solutions\FreeRAM XP Pro\FreeRAM XP Pro.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcdetect.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mctskshd.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\Program Files\WordWeb\wweb32.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MSKSrvr.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgbhp.exe C:\Program Files\ntl\broadband medic\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\MsPMSPSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfAgent.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cidaemon.exe C:\Documents and Settings\MARK WARD\Desktop\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R0 - Hello Mark1864,
Digital Line Detectdetects whether you are plugged into a digital telephone line and displays the information graphically. Installed by Dell (and maybe others) and is included with all Connexant V.92 and Broadcom modems. ---------------------------------- Run a scan with HijackThis. Place a 'check' next to the following entry and click 'Fix Checked' (make sure no browsers are open, and close any other open programs.) R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm ---------------------------------- Since I'm not sure what link you clicked on, let's do an online scan to make sure nothing is lurking. Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan ** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner

Hi Ried,
Thanks for your quick & helpful response and also your "reassuring" info about Digital Line Detect. I ran a scan with HijackThis and placed a 'check' next to the said entry. I then ran an online scan with Panda ActiveScan and "No viruses or other malicious software have bound found!" So it didn't generate a report to post. I've since run a new HijackThis log as follows :- Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:38:04, on 12/04/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfTray.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ntl\BROADB~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\mcvsshld.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\oasclnt.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsescn.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MskAgent.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\Surround Mixer\CTSysVol.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2\DVDAudio\CTDVDDet.EXE C:\WINDOWS\CTHELPER.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTsvcCDA.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcdetect.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe C:\Program Files\iTunesHelper.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mctskshd.exe C:\Program Files\Sky Alerts\skinker.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfService.exe C:\Program Files\BBC News alerts\skinkers.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee QuickClean\PlgUni.exe C:\Program Files\YourWare Solutions\FreeRAM XP Pro\FreeRAM XP Pro.exe C:\Program Files\WordWeb\wweb32.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgbhp.exe C:\Program Files\ntl\broadband medic\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\MsPMSPSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfAgent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MSKSrvr.exe C:\Program Files\ntl\broadband medic\bin\mad.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Motive\Common\MOTIVE~1.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\cidaemon.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\mps\mscifapp.exe C:\Documents and Settings\MARK WARD\Desktop\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R0 - Hi POADB,
I seem okay now thanks. Thanks for the help, but before assigning this thread as resolved - is there any chance of just commenting on the following for me too please? :- Before contacting Tech Support Forum, I had initially found the following link :- http://www.pchell.com/support/aboutblank.shtml “How do I Remove the About:Blank homepage hijacker?” As instructed I downloaded a registry program called Reglite and navigated to the following entry :- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows. I had to look for the Key named AppInit_DLLs, where the value in this key is the hidden dll file that is/was apparently causing all my problems. Under the description “Specifies which dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) installed on the computer are loaded by Windows 3.x-based applications” - I found the name APPInit_DLLs ; type REG_SZ ; size 1. I didn’t quite understand what to do next, so gave up and contacted you guys about About:blank instead. But do I need to be concerned about hidden dll files and About:blank constantly returning? Yours gratefully, Mark. |

According to that outlook, there would be a value of a dll file in the lower line of the properties sheet if you double click on the AppInit_DLLs "value name" in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows key, or it would be in the Data column on that main page.
According to the info you've provided, it appears as though you have the default of <blank, nothing there> in the value line, which is how my system appears in reglite. If you're not experiencing any further problems, I think you can rest easy, as your log isn't presenting any issues. If you do still have problems, we have other means at our disposal. Hope that helps.

Hi tetonbob,
Yep I've just opened reglite, double clicked on AppInit_DLLs and there was nothing in the value box. About : Blank hasn't reappeared - so this issue is resolved! ![]() [Yes and I made a donation earlier today (hope you got it?) for all your help recently.] But there is just one more thing :- suddenly my Internet Explorer (6.0) has become awkward and the Cannot Find Server and "The page cannot be displayed" message has become more prevalent on links I click onto. Yes I did follow the listed "Please try the following" Internet Options instructions, but these didn't work. I did download IE-SPYAD the other day - but these are not restricted sites that won't be displayed. (No red circle in botton right of page.) For instance if I type ebay in my Google Search bar and then click on the first ebay listing that is displayed (ie the bona fide address), I get "the page cannot be displayed" message. But when I type exactly the same website address (as per the Google search result) in my IE address bar - then the ebay site page does come up no problem!! Clicking onto some (not all) of the regular advertised links in my MSN Messenger (7.5) are coming up with "the page cannot be displayed message" too.[Sorry if I should have posted a new thread here, but this IE problem happened as soon as the about:blank issue was solved.] Yours, Mark. |

Hi Mark,
You're fine continuing in this thread. ![]() Let's check the IE settings. Launch Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Security tab On the Advanced tab, ensure that "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" is checked. If that doesn't solve the issue, please run another scan with HijackThis and post it here. |

Can not find server - Microsoft Internet Explorer
Hi Ried,
The "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" was already checked. This happens with many sites, but taking ebay & paypal as examples:- If I put ebay in my Google Search bar, the sponsored link www.ebay.co.uk comes up as the first listing. But clicking onto this link and I got the "Cannot Find Server" - Microsoft Internet Server message. I've pasted the actual address for you, that came up and wouldn't be displayed :- http://www.google.com/url?sa=l&ai=Bh...keyword%3Debay [Er for some reason this message board won't post the full address?? ] Typing in paypal into Google, www.paypal.co.uk was listed but when I clicked onto it, this is the address which appeared resulting in "the page cannot be displayed" message :- http://www.google.com/pagead/iclk?sa...OMO/GOOGLE/MR1 [Er for some reason this message board won't post the full address?? ] Going into my MSN Messenger, clicking on the ebay icon and then a listing - and this is the address which couldn't be displayed :- http://adfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/ck/71...3075-255?id=40 I have McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Microsoft Defender, Spyware Guard, SpywareBlaster and last week installed the IE-SPYAD list. Hi Mark,
There are quite a few complaints about adfarm.mediaplex and ebay. See this. Please copy these instructions to Notepad and save to your desktop for easy reference. ************************************** Download Hoster Run Hoster.exe. Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available). Click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK. Click the X to exit the program. Now, download Host.zip Extract the file & overwrite the existing copy located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\host Download Ewido Security Suite
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido. The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility. Run Cleanup! using the following configuration: 1. Click Options... 2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp! 3. Uncheck the following:
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted. * CleanUp! will not create any backups!! ------------------------------------------------ Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. ------------------------------------------------ Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) ieSpell ------------------------------------------------ Run a scan in HijackThis. 'Check' each of the following if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): O9 - Extra button: ieSpell - {0E17D5B7-9F5D-4fee-9DF6-CA6EE38B68A8} - C:\Program Files\ieSpell\iespell.dll O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: ieSpell - {0E17D5B7-9F5D-4fee-9DF6-CA6EE38B68A8} - C:\Program Files\ieSpell\iespell.dll O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {1606D6F9-9D3B-4aea-A025-ED5B2FD488E7} - C:\Program Files\ieSpell\iespell.dll O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: ieSpell Options - {1606D6F9-9D3B-4aea-A025-ED5B2FD488E7} - C:\Program Files\ieSpell\iespell.dll Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis. --------------------------- Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading: * select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. *Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. * Click OK. --------------------------- Delete the following Folder if it still exists. Still the same!
Hi Ried,
Followed all those instructions - although I'm not sure I did the Host.zip section correctly? Extract the file & overwrite the existing copy located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\host - well I just clicked on the mvps.bat and didn't know how to do anything else!!! Yes, go ahead and re hide those files. The Thumbs.db should disappear.
Did you install any new anti-malware programs around the same time these problems began such as Spybot, AdAware or Windows Defender? |

Hi Reid,
Thanks for your continuing help. I have had McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006, Ad-Aware, Spybot and Microsoft Defender installed for some time. But over the past week I have done/noticed :- 1: Installed Spyware Guard, SpywareBlaster and the IE-SPYAD list. All as per the http://www.techsupportforum.com/reso...-b-trojan.html thread. 2: Installed the latest critical windows updates. Plus (for no particular reason I guess) the optional windows updates :- a) Intel Corporation - Networking - Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection. b) Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB902344). c) Update for Windows XP (KB904942). 3: When I run my CCleaner, I'm getting a new problem called "Obsolete Key" : SidneyChong co. Whatever that is? 4: Yes I've just removed ieSpell as part of your last instructions, but last week ieSpell had "suddenly & mysteriously" disappeared from my IE toolbar and I had to reinstall it. [Bye the way, is ieSpell suspect? Or can I reinstall ieSpell again - I much prefer it to Google's spell checker!] 5: The Back button on my IE toolbar has become tempermental and I now often have to double click it to get it to work. 6: I've run a debranding program over the past week :-debrandinghttp://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/ispunbrand.htm 7: Also over the past couple of weeks I've installed the freeware programs - MiniLyrics, Registrar Registry Manager and FreeRAM XP Pro. I've think that's about all, hope the information helps you?? Yours gratefully, Mark |

No apologies necessary, Mark.
![]() From what I could gather from the information posted at that link I gave you earlier, and others I have found, it would appear you need to allow the cookie for adfarm.mediaplex or you cannot access e-bay. I suspect one of the new tools is blocking that. Quote:
Launch Spybot click on Mode> Advanced Mode Now click on Ignore Products and scroll down alphabetically to MediaPlex and ‘check’ the entry so it will ignore it in future scans. Launch Spyware Blaster. At the top of the main menu there, click on Internet Explorer (next to Status) scroll all the just about to the end and you'll see Mediaplex listed there-- uncheck it. Mediaplex is in IESpyAd also as a restiricted site. Let's try allowing the cookies first and see if you have any luck. If not, we'll go after editing IESpyAd. Let me know how it goes. |

Hi Ried,
Yes - went into Spybot and 'checked' MediaPlex. Then into SpywareBlaster and 'unchecked' Mediaplex and clicked the remove protection button for unchecked items. Couldn't find adfarm in those two lists, but I did find adfarm (no Mediaplex in there) in Internet Options>Security>Restricted Sites list, placed by IESpy-Ad. I deleted adfarm in this list. Still having the same problems though, I'm afraid. And it's not just with links to ebay. Whether this extra info is any use to you, I don't know :- I have a program called NTL BROADBAND MEDIC from my internet service provider - and when I get these "Cannot Find Server" messages - I get a MEDIC pop-up with "Browser/Internet Issue Detected". I press its repair button, but all it offers is to clear the temporary files - which doesn't solve my problems. Although it has also recently come up with the instruction "Restore Proxy Settings"?? There is also that issue of the Back button not working properly in my IE toolbar - when I log onto some (not all) sites? And I tried a system restore, to before I downloaded last weeks Windows Updates, but this didn't solve my IE Browser issue either. Finally; when trying to log into PayPal, I'm being told to check the "Override Automatic Cookie Handling" in Advanced Privacy Settings?? Whether this extra info is of any use to you, I don't know! Yours, Mark. |

Hi Mark,
When you began this thread on 4/11, none of this was an issue, correct? Have you changed any settings in your Internet Explorer recently--other that what I had you check? Let's try registering Internet Explorer's DLL files. Go to Start->Run and type in command and click OK. Then copy/paste each of the following in the box, (one at a time) hitting the Enter key after each line: regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll regsvr32 Shell32.dll regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll regsvr32 Mshtml.dll regsvr32 Urlmon.dll regsvr32 softpub.dll regsvr32 browseui.dll |

Hi Ried,
Can't be quite sure exactly when my IE browser became an issue. What I do know is that it became problematic at some point post the 4th April 2006 - but exactly when I can't pinpoint. On the 4th April I posted a request to help me with FakeAlert-B-trojan (http://www.techsupportforum.com/reso...-b-trojan.html) What I didn't realise when making that original post, was that about:blank was also in my HijactThis log back then too! In TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS: In LAN Settings, I've checked "Automatically Detect Settings" recently - but other than that, all other settings are set to Default. I've just completed START>RUN>COMMAND and typed in those 8 lines, Enter and got the successful message. Didn't know how to come out though, other than pressing the End Now key?? Posted another HijackThis log. I've highlighted a new reference to ProxyOverride. Hi Mark,
I'm still suspecting one of the anti-malware programs setting. Humor me a bit here, if you will. ![]() Disable Spyware Guard, then connect to the internet and tell me if you still have the same problem. |

Hi Ried,
Actually this thread was initially concerning About : Blank and was resolved some time back (thanks!) So I suppose really I should have told you to close the thread, mark it as resolved and then started a new thread about this IE browser problem? But that's bye the bye now. So regarding the anti-malware programs, well what I've just done is :- 1: Disabled SpyGuard. 2: Disabled all SpywardBlaster protection. 3: Disabled Windows Defender. 4: Disabled Personal Firewall & Privacy Service in my McAfee ISS 2006. 5: In Internet Properties>Privacy>Sites - I have removed all managed web sites list. 6: In Internet Properties>Security>Restricted Sites - I reset security settings to low for this zone. (I was going to remove all the IE-SPYAD listed sites, but apart from having to delete each site individually, I didn't know which keystrokes to use to delete the complete list? Shift + Left Click wouldn't highlight list from top to bottom??) Still the same CANNOT FIND SERVER "THE PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED" issue though. Now I did all the above 6 things at the same time - so unless it's something to do with Host.zip or that long list provided by IE-SPYAD - I don't think it's an anti-malware program issue. In Internet Properties>Programs - I also reset the web settings button, but what about "Manage Ad-ons". I have a list of 20 in there, could one of them be interfering with the operation of my IE browser?? Hope this new info about my system is of some help to you? Yours gratefully, Mark. |
