This is my first post so humor me or help me if I am doing it wrong.

Please note on the log item - 04 -HKLM\..Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_OOO1_0721}... I cannot delete this using Hijack this as I get the return "Unexpected error occured! Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe".exe), and a request to report to merijn@spywareinfo.com. I have tried burrowing down into the registry with my limited skills but cannot locate the subject entry. When I try to parse this log I get the return - "Could not execute query correctly.:1062: Duplicate entry 'NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0721]...Can you help me rid myself of this pestilence? Hello and Welcome to TSF!! All apologies on the delay

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido (only if you have Windows 2000 or XP). If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Don't run it yet.

Download Ewido Security Suite

• Install Ewido Security Suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
• Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido

You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
• Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.


Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)

• Click Scanner
• Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
• Click OK when prompted to clean files

With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:

• "Perform action on all infections"
• Choose clean and click OK.

Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop. Post that in your next reply along with any other logs requested.

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour

Run a scan in Hijack This. Check the box next to the following item and click fix checked.

Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.


· Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner

1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer

• If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
• Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
• Click on See report then click Save report

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please run a new HijackThis log

Hijack This WILL NOT remove 04-HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0721] "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YN0RO3AP\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe" Checking the box next to that item in Hijack and clicking fix checked only results in the message - Unexpected error occurred! Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe".exe). Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have. This message has been copied to your clipboard. The 04 item IS NOT removed. Reports have been sent to merijn@spywareinfo.com. Prior to my post of the original Hijack This log BitDefender was run, Ewido was run, CCleaner was run, Spybot was run and Adware was run. Ewido cannot be run in safe mode on this computer. Ewido is run from Windows2000 and that is the report shown below. Per your request Cleanup! has been run, Ewido run, and Panda run. Below are the three logs.

Make sure the word CurrentVersion below doesn't have a space in it before you save the file:
Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"NI.UWFX5LP_0001_0721"=-

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Right click and copy the below lines. Go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YN0RO3AP\WinFixer2005ScannerInst all[1].exe

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Reset hidden/system files and folders

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View tab.
• Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
• Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
• Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

Enable Windows Auto Update

• Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
• tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
• Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
• Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  
• SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  
• SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
  Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  
• AD-AWARE
  Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  
• IE-SPYAD
  IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here
  
• MVPS HOST FILE[/color]
  The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
  • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
  • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
    Extract All from the menu.
    
  • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
    "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    
  • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    
  • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
• ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
  It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

  It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Also, be sure to update your Sun Java......versions earlier than 1.5 are exploits used by Winfixer/Vundo



Updating Java:

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
• Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java, if not 1.5 (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
  
  It may have a coffee cup icon next to it.
  Select it and click Remove.
• Then Download and install the newest version from here:
  http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

If you have version 1.5, do this:


Updating Java and Clearing Cache

1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
   Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
   • http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
5. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
6. There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
   • Downloaded Applets
     Downloaded Applications
     Other Files
7. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
   Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
