FakeAlert-B trojan
Hello for the first time and thanks so much for providing this fantastic site.
My updated McAfee IS Suite 2006 doesn't seem to be protecting me very well!! As per today, I am constantly being attacked by FAKEALERT-B trojan. The files C:\Windows\System32\1024\IdB34.tmp + IdE220.tmp + IdF8A6.tmp etc are being constantly infected, even though my McAfee tells me "Trojan Found and Cleaned". And also NewMalware.j infected the file C:\Windows\System32\nvctrl.exe. The McAfee popup "Trojan Found and Cleaned" warning is happening every 30 minutes, followed by a Dell Support warning message, telling me that my IE security level has just been automatically set to low. Also 2 shortcut "security troubleshooting" items have mysteriously being appearing on my desktop - from the very suspicious address http://testsecurityonline.com/ I've run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Microsoft Defender and run my McAfee Virus Scan. (All kept updated). Infections were found (and removed) but after restarting my computer, I am still being attacked!!! I've run a Hijackthis scan and would be most grateful for any help. Thanks, Mark. This is the only report it seemed to generate;
SFFix - Ver 6.03.26 05/04/2006 15:52 + + + + PRE-RUN FILES + + + + + + + + POST-RUN FILES + + + + 15:52 THIS LOGFILE IS LOCATED AT "C:\Log_sffix.txt". PLEASE POST IT IN THE FORUM But my system seems to be working perfectly now (fingers crossed). Thanks tetonbob - you seem to have solved my problem!! What are the chances of being re-infected though - I thought my McAfee 2006 Suite would have protected me?? [Seemed to be the Ewido scan that cleared it, so presumably just run again if problem re-occurs??] Yours gratefully, Mark. |

Excellent....all files had already been killed, but it also invoked a regstry fix to remove trash buried there.
It was mostly smitrem that cleared it, but Ewido did dig out the SpyFalcon file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dfrgsrv.exe Ewido is a great tool to keep around. This isn't really a virus, so that's why it got by. A multi-layer approach to protection is required, and begins with you, the user, knowing the sites you're going to, and the files you're downloading are clean. Even doing this, an innocent can get afflicted by drive-by downloads. Here's some final instructions, with more protections to put in place as well. Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Create a new System Restore point
Please ensure that you have already patched your system against the recent WMF exploit. Go to this page to get the KB912919 patch. Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use: In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Created new System Restore point, Windows Auto Update already enabled. Already had SPYBOT & AD-AWARE (+ WINDOWS DEFENDER), but downloaded and installed SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD as recommended.
I also downloaded and ran IE-SPYAD & MVPS HOST FILE. (Presumably once run, job done, and it was okay to then delete IE-SPYAD & MVPS HOST FILE??) My antivirus software is McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006, which includes a Personal Firewall. My Windows Firewall is also automatically set to on (although I'm not sure I need both on??) My computer is working perfectly now, thanks. And I've also noticed that many website adverts (from respectable companies) are now being blocked too - which previously my McAfee privacy service ad-blocker (checked) just hadn't been blocking. So thanks for all your help tetonbob - and unless you think it's necessary to comment on anything mentioned in this particular reply, then you can mark this thread is resolved!! Yours gratefully, Mark. |

Hi Mark -
I keep the IESPYAD and MVPS hosts file folders around, personally, but it's no biggie if you've deleted them. If you need to make changes to them in the future (the internal lists are updated from time to time), just get a new one, and use the install batch file to replace the old one. You should have only one Firewall active at a time. I would think that McAfee would disable the Windows Firewall upon it's becoming active. What makes you think they are both active? In your Control Panel>Security Center, the Firewall light should be green. If you expand it (click the drop down), I would expect it to say the McAfee Firewall is active, as that is what mine says with regards to my ZoneAlarm Firewall. At the bottom of the Security Center applet is the Windows Firewall link. If you click on it, what does it tell you? It should be off, if McAfee is on. If this isn't the case, you should check to ensure the McAfee firewall is on, although from the log it certainly appears to be, through the program interface. It's a better firewall than XP's. As to the ad blocking, that's the power of the hosts file. Hope this helps....I'll leave this open till you're certain all is well with regard to your firewall.

Hi tetonbob,
Security Center, Firewall stated "At least one of the firewalls installed on this computer is on" - then gave the warning that two firewalls may conflict with each other. I clicked the Windows Firewall link and Windows Firewall was indeed checked (my fault probably, now I come to think about it). I've turned it off, so only my McAfee Personal Firewall is now ON. So my fault not McAfee installation, but now all sorted!! Thanks for all your help - everything has been resolved!! |
