keep getting 'page cannot be displayed' cont.

Perhaps I should add some more info. I scanned with spybot S&D and got nothing. I scanned with ad-aware and got nothing. I scanned with microsoft antispy and got nothing. I scanned with pest patrol and it came back with 3 hits All located in the same folder. C:\Documents and Settings\Family Computer\local settings\temp. The three files are autorun.exe, autorungui.dll, and mssserif120.fon. All three of these files were indentified by pest patrol as being trojans, but before i got rid of them, I googled them and some sights say that these are false positives in Pest Patrol. So I really don't know if these files are problems or not.

Now the next problem I have is that everytime i am on certain websites (e-bay for example), My explorer crashes and I end up with a text file on my desktop called hs_err_pid####.log. I don't know what is happening here either. The #### is always a different 4 digit number.

HELP!!!

Hello tppjr1 and welcome,

Please copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

Please carry out the instructions in the order given.

Download Hoster
Run Hoster.exe.
Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
Click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
Click the X to exit the program.

Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

---------------------------

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

---------------------------

Run a scan in HijackThis. 'Check' each of the following if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Thank you for your help.

I followed a of your instructions, though I ran into some problems.

I downloaded and installed Hoster and ran it with no problem.

I downloaded Ewido. Installed it using the recommended configuration and updated it.

I downloaded cleanup and installed it.

I rebooted to safe mode.

I ran hijackthis and checked what you told me to (I think I may have messed up here with the R0's)

I opened up clean up and followed your directions. When iI did the scan the first time, I did it in demo to see what it was going to delete. It said it would delete 2.91GB of stuff. I reviewed it and it all seemed to be ok to delete. Then I did the real thing and it only deleted 1.2GB of stuff??

I ran Ewido and it took better than 2 1/2 hrs. Here is the report log:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido anti-malware - Scan report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created on: 1:27:59 PM, 4/4/2006
+ Report-Checksum: A57DD25D

+ Scan result:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\ins -> Adware.WebRebates : Cleaned with backup
C:\Program Files\Bit Lord 1.1\Downloads\Slysoft.AnyDVD.v5.7.3.1.WinALL.Cracked.PROPER.READ.NFO-CRD.rar/Slysoft.AnyDVD.v5.7.3.1.WinALL.Cracked.PROPER.READ.NFO-CRD\File.DiZ\Installation\setup.exe -> Dropper.Delf.tx : Cleaned with backup

::Report End

Then I tried to run the Panda scan at least a dozen times, but the active x would not install. I disabled Zone Alarm, Disabled Avast!, Disabled Microsoft Antispyware, Disabled Spyware Blaster, Disabled Pop ups in Explorer and in Google tool bar, and even lowered my internet security settins to low, but it would still not install.

Anyway here is my new hijack this scan log:

Pay close attention to the first to R0 lines, I may have checked the wrong ones from the original scan. There is still no URL listed here??

And one more thing. I still get that hs_err_pid####log error on my desk top after visiting certain sights like e-bay and java chat site. This error is obviously generated by java. Could this be because in internet options > advanced I have checked use JRE 1.5.0_06 for appelt and Jit Compiler for virtual machine enabled??

I'm at wits end!!

Hi,

Let's remove the malware first, then we'll look into the Java error if it still occurs.

We need all scanning done in HijackThis from Normal Mode. Please run another scan and post the log here.

Try this online scanner:

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Hi tppjr1,

Run a scan with HijackThis and 'check' the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

-------------------------------------

You can reset your Home Page. Launch IE and click on Tools>Internet Options>
Or
Tools>Reset Web Settings

-------------------------------------

Reboot your system.

Are you still getting
Quote:
hs_err_pid####log error on my desk top after visiting certain sights like e-bay and java chat site.

Thanks Again.

I ran hijack this and checked those three items. I reset my homepage on tools>internet options like you said then rebooted.

To answer your question, Yes I still get the java errer hs_err_pid####.log error. And I'm tired of deleting it from my desktop!

Hi,

I have had little success tracking this down without more detail. Those codes should give a detail of where the errors occurred. Are you able to access those sites properly?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by go to these sites properly.

I'll explain a little further. When I go to the chat site and try to load java appelet, It usually fails to load the first time, which creates an error log on my desktop. When I am on e-bay, If I try to add a watched item to my favorites. I will get an error from explorer that a problem has occured and explorer must shut down with the option to send or not send a report. I choose don't send, then explorer shuts down. Then there is one of those errors on my desktop.

I can post one if you want, but they are rather lengthy. I have a recycling bin full of them. hs_err_pid####.log is giving me a headache. (The #### is a different number all the time).

My apologies for not being more clear. Yes, that was what I meant, and it would seem you are not able to access them properly if IE is shutting down due to the java error.

I would suggest uninstalling your Sun Java via the Add/Remove panel, then any folders located at C:\Program Files\ Java. Reboot, then reinstall your Sun Java.

Let me know how that goes.

Thanks again for all your help. Browser is now working fine. I am still getting the error logs on my desktop from java, though. I got two yesterday.
They are hs_err_pid2832.log and hs_err_pid900.log. That's the first one with only 3 digits for the ####. Is there at least some way to disable the logs from appearing on my desktop. Like I said before, I have a recycling bin full of them. Some more of the error Numbers are 2020, 2556, 2676, 2848, and 4040 if this helps you at all. Thanks again.

Not sure if this will do it, but let's give it a shot. Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Java and click on the Advanced tab (last tab there). Then click on the + sign for Debugging. Uncheck Enable logging (if it's checked). Hit OK.

The box is already unchecked! I found a few websites doing a google search on the error log name and most say something about the error being caused by a font. I really don't quite get it. If you want, I can post one of the errors. If you anymore suggestions, I would be happy to try them. You have been extremely helpful to me. Thanks!

Those errors are referring to the process IDs. I want you to go back to Internet Explorer->Tools->Internet Options->Advanced tab. Scroll down to Microsoft VM and see if Java logging enabled is checked. If so, uncheck it.

If the above doesn't apply/work, try uninstalling Java and then restart and reinstall it back.

Once again, the box is already unchecked. I have uninstalled java, cleaned out the registry of all java runtime entries with jv16 powertools, shut down, restarted and reinstalled java. This time I reinstalled with the offline manual download.
I wonder if it is windows creating this error report? I'm still at a loss. How do I see if windows error report is enabled so that I can disable that, too?
In internet options > advanced, there is a check in the box in the browsing section that says show friendly HTTP error messages. Could that be it?

I doubt it. From what I found, it's Java related...

To see if Windows Error Reporting is enabled, right click on My Computer->Properties and then go to the Advanced tab. Click on Error Reporting button on the bottom. Disable/Enable there...

No, friendly HTTP error messages is not related to this either. If I recall correctly, this shows the 404 error messages and others without going too technical...

Try posting this question in the Windows or Software forum and see if anyone knows about this issue. I would say that I'm 99.9% sure the log is from Java.
