Help removing Haxdoor and maybe others?

I have a Dell 8250 with WinXP SP2 that recently came up sick. I am normally running ZoneAlarm Firewall, Windows Antispyware, and AVG Antivirus. On 26 March, AVG reported during its night scan a virus it labeled as Java/Byteverify which it quarantined.

On 27 March, AVG did another scan and reported and quarantined two files that it called Trojan Horse Exploit.Downloader. They were in the following

...\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4PY36P6V\zl[1].anr
...\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\BZT7VHGK\nc[1].anr

I didn't think much of it then, but on the 25th, I was downloading and trying some freeware to convert some .mid files to .wav so that I could burn them to a disk. I have since deleted all of that as well as emptying the quarantine. Perhaps I picked up something then?

I also noticed that ZoneAlarm was reporting that Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) was asking for permission to be a server, which I denied.

At this point, I started doing some closer investigation. Anyway, on 29 March during a reboot AVG reported a Trojan Backdoor.Generic2.PKT (related to winupdt.exe). I found that Windows Security Center was disabled ("The security center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open Security Center again.) What I found in services.msc was that the security center service was not even listed, nor was the windows firewall. Apparently these trojans have disabled security center, and if not for ZoneAlarm, would have already compromised my system. At that point I unplugged the LAN connection to avoid making anything worse (a little slow on the draw, I know).

I ran McAfee's Stinger, AdAware, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and Spybot, but they all found nothing. I tried to do a system restore, but it gave an error and would not complete the restore.

I ran HijackThis, and the log is below. Then I disabled system restore and ran several scans in safe mode.

Vcleaner - nothing reported
The Cleaner - nothing reported
Spyware Doctor - found 3 related to backdoor.hackdoor, but would not remove them unless I paid for it (c:\windows\system32\ps.a3d, qz.dll, qz.sys)
XoftSpy - found above three plus c:\windows\system32\klo5.sys

Then I ran Haxfix and gave it the key PPTP, and it removed the above files.

a-squared - nothing reported
Scan Spyware is running now (when it's done, I can run HijackThis again).

So in addition to asking for help, my question is this - given that there is damage to the system in that these trojans have hacked explorer, winupdate, security center, and windows firewall, should I just give up and reformat, or keep going to eliminate the problem?

That's a lot of info.....and several issues to address. Haxdoor is still present. If you have another version of haxfix still, delete it.

Please do this:

Download & install - HaxFix.EXE.
During installation, please select these options:
  • Create a desktop icon
  • Launch HaxFix
When Haxfix starts, a red DOS window will open.
Select the option to - Make logfile - Type 1 & press`Enter'.
Haxfix will produce a log for you to post back here.

Also do this:

I have attached a file to this post - look.zip
  • Download this file to your desktop.
  • Double click on the zip folder

  • Doubleclick look.bat and notepad will open.
  • Copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Thanks for the help. I'm away from my PC now, but will follow your instructions this evening and reply with answers.

Just a quick question - should I run haxfix and your look.bat in safe mode?

Negative. Bob would have specified Safe Mode otherwise. Please run them from Normal Windows.

Alright, I've got some more information. First (I don't know if this is useful or not), the ScanSpyware finished and found 5 items...

VX2 (regkey HKLM\software\vendor)
PowerReg Scheduler (c:\windows\powerReg.dat)
IAmBigBrother (folder c:\windows\system32\fonts)
IRC.Demfire (folder c:\Program Files\Microsoft)
KidControl (folder c:\windows\system32\fonts)

Now, I rebooted and then ran HaxFix as you instructed. While doing that, ZoneAlarm gave several warnings that TCP/IP was trying to access the internet (which I denied - it's disconnected anyway). Here is the log file...

Hi Kevin -

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Highlight this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess

Go to File->Export and save the key somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download this regfix (right-click and save as Files: ALL TYPES):
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/sharedaccess.reg
Place it on your desktop.
Now doubleclick sharedaccess.reg
Click yes/ok at the prompt.

Then REBOOT!! Important!

After reboot, go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Click ok

Wait till the Dosprompt (black window) closes again.
Then look if you can access the Security Center and Firewall again.

Before we continue, I just now noticed you have msconfig enabled. This may prevent us from seeing everything running on your system. Please re-enable all startup items.

Go to Start>Run type msconfig and press Enter.

Select Normal Startup - Load all Device Drivers and Services

Reboot and post a new log.

Thanks, followed your instructions to the letter. We're getting somewhere!

I can now access the control panel for Windows Firewall (I have it set to "off" because ZoneAlarm is running). However, Security Center still gives the "unavailable" error.

I reset msconfig. Sorry about that.

I wasn't clear on which log you wanted to see, so I included all three (Haxfix, Look, and HJT)...

Here is the Haxfix log...

Make sure the Security Center service is set to Automatic...

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click on Security Center |
In the Startup type: box select Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | Click OK | Close Services

Also, check these services:

Security Center needs these services running before it can start. Make sure
that these services are set to Automatic and started.

In this order...
1. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (Practically everything depends on this
service to be running.)

2. Event Log (No dependencies)

3. Windows Management Instrumentation (Depends on (RPC) & Event Log to be
running first)

Let me know.....we can try a registry repair of this as well.

Thanks again for the reply. Security Center does not show up at all in services.msc list. All three of the dependencies are Started and in Automatic.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Highlight this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc

Go to File->Export and save the key somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download this regfix (right-click and save as Files: ALL TYPES):
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...terrestore.reg
Place it on your desktop.
Now doubleclick securitycenterrestore.reg
Click yes/ok at the prompt.

Great! Security Center is now running and reporting correctly that ZoneAlarm and AVG are active.

You would probably not be surprised that I've spent four nights in a row up past midnight trying to fix this (and I have to be at work at 6AM).

Now what's next?

Excellent! Kelly is my hero....

Now, I'd like you to run a couple of lengthy scans, even though your last HJT log is clean. These are very effective tools we rely on to root out what we can't see.

Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64. Download & run this tool to find out for sure.....

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, if it does please do so.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:
  • "Perform action on all infections"
  • Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot in normal mode

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------------------------------

Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Post results from:

Delete this file, and be careful what and where you download....

C:\Documents and Settings\Haehl\My Documents\My Downloads\Computer Utilities\DVD Ripping\dvdrnb.exe

If it resists deletion, boot to safe mode and delete it from there.

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Please ensure that you have already patched your system against the recent WMF exploit.
Go to this page to get the KB912919 patch.

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available:
  • Avast!

  • AVG

  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

TetonBob,

Thanks so much for your help. I have followed your instructions and everything seems to be running fine now. I never would have figured this out for myself. I just wish I had found techsupportforum.com sooner!

I have assumed that you intended me to uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware when I installed the items you recommended.

I really appreciate your help.

MSAS has been replaced now with Windows Defender....but I prefer the other tools in my list. MSAS gave me many false positives, and had known adwares in it's database set to Ignore. I don't use it.

Only one AV and one Firewall are used at a time. Those are just choices.

Happy Computing!
