Slowdown from VIRII & Malware

I am experiencing extreme slowdown with my PC. I have DEll, 2.2 GHZ,WIN XP, 768 RAM. I recently upgraded the RAM from 256 to present. Yesterday the slowdown began after running ADAWARE,Spyware Blaster, CCleaner. I frequent Raging Bull message boards and have visited a lot with the PC advice board. I have run Bitdefender, Hijackthis, & PCpitstop. PCpitstop noted 4 virii including one Sober. When I ran Norton's fix, there was none found. I use Grisoft AVG every night for virus protection.
I guess that is enuf to start....nigel77

Hi Nigel77 -

We generally begin a review here with a HJT log, if you think you have a malware problem. If you don't think it's malware, post a query in our MS Computing section.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

My highjack report

I tried to follow your directions to the letter BUT could not get a second AV program to run. Did not use CE shredder because I could not find where you wanted it ran. I have a Partition error & a boot sector error according to AVG. No virii according to AVG. Runs incredibly slow...sometimes taking 2-3 minutes to post a message on a board OR switch to another web site. Hope I have provided enuf info.

I only asked for a HJT log.

A partition error and a boot sector error indicates to me you may have OS issues, not malware, or the previous viruses have done some corruption. You may want to check with the guys and gals in MS Computing, XP Forum.

These can also be false positives from AVG. If they look like this:

>> Partion Table (MBR) Read error

>> Boot Sector of C: Read error

I'd lean towards FPs, and try an online scan.

As your HJT log is showing nothing major, my next step would be to have you run an online scan...but I take it from your comments you're unable to? What happens when you try?

See if this one works for you:

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

I can't fix what I can't see.....

Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64. Download & run this tool to find out for sure.....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Viewpoint Toolbar
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delete the contents of this folder:

C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine

---------------------------------------------------

Go to Start>Run then copy and paste, or type the following, then press Enter:

regsvr32 /u occache.dll

Delete the following if present:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\flash.inf
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Go to Start>Run then copy and paste, or type the following, then press Enter:

regsvr32 occache.dll

---------------------------------------------------

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, Do NOT at this time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:
  • "Perform action on all infections"
  • Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE

Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter

* Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
* Click Apply

Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here, along with the saved Ewido log.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is your system still slow? This may not be malware related if so, as you seem reasonably clean.

Latest update after tests

I tried to follow step by step as you outlined (which makes it very easy.
The 04- HKLM View Mgr was not in existence. All others were deleted.
My one problem centers around Ewido. Took 81 minutes and found299.535 objects infected. When it began cleaning, it ran clear up to 25000 infections cleaned....I thought that was very unlikely so I stopped it w/o a report.
I did rerun Hijack This:

I've actually seen infected systems with more finds than that.....it would behoove you to allow it to run to completion, fix all it finds, and post the log, so I can review anything it may have failed to delete, which may show som of why you were having issues.

Please, run the scan in safe mode again, have a nice cup of coffee or cool drink (away from the keyboard :grin), and allow it to run to conclusion, saving the log.

You'll probably have to attach the log to a reply, if it's that large.

Also, please UNcheck the Wordwrap feature in Notepad, on the menu bar under Format.

If you've flushed System Restore as requested in my last post, and now run CleanUp once again, the next scan should take less time and find fewer items.

Ewido #2

G'Morn!
I uninstalled & reinstalled ALL of Ewido. It downloaded easier second time and ran about 10 minutes faster. However, after Cleaning 27445 objects, it froze. This time I let it sit 90 minutes b4 shutting down. Cursor was not usable at all.
I did notice that much time was spent on Mozilla files which I thought were deleted. I have used F'Fox for a long time and actually like it better than IE but I doubt I go back to it once I get IE set up the way I want.
Sorryt for the trouble.........

It's no trouble, Nigel77

I love the Fox....and may never go back to IE.....

It's important to clear whatever junk is remaining, and I know you're growing tired of this project, but if you'll bear with me, I think we can clear it up. This tool will quickly allow you to delete the Firefox junk that's been accumulated.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE

Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter

* Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
* Click Apply

Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK

Then, there shouldn't be any need to uninstall and reinstall Ewido......just run it again in safe mode, and have it clean everything it finds. Try to save any log you can, and post it when you're done.

Also post a new HJT log.

Frustration Supreme

Ewido is probably a very good program BUT in every instance that I have tried to follow directions it becomes unstable and non-responsive. I let it sit for nearly 3 hours after cleaning. I was trying to move the picture of the program into center screen but it would never move. Cou;ld'nt even close w/o CAD.
I did run HJT though...............

Beta??????????????

Something I noticed as I was posting last reply....in the menu bar at bottom of screen next to START, the window is identified as MSN Beta. My IE version is 6.0.29.
Don't know of that matters.

Don't know precisely about the MSN Beta thing...are you running MSN Messenger, and is it's Quick Launch icon next to the Start Button? They did put out a Beta version of something new recently.

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Please ensure that you have already patched your system against the recent WMF exploit.
Go to this page to get the KB912919 patch.

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available:
  • Avast!

  • AVG

  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Fini.......

Thank You!
I believe I am OK now. I read and/or copied & downloaded all the programs, tutorials you recommended EXCEPT the AV tutorial which would not load. Will try to find one elsewhere.
Thanx for your help and patience. A donation will be sent.
