My Hi-Jack log

I'm trying to fix my dad's laptop that appears to be badly infected. Everytime it starts up, there's and error message that it can't find the file "sstsmon.dll", and McCafee pops up with virus warnings and things all the time. Some of those have been "spywarestrike.dldr" and "mssearchnet.exe". So far I have:
Ran Ad-Aware
Ran Spy-bot
Ran CWS Shredder
Ran McCafee Virus scan
All in safe mode. I next went to run the online Trend-Micro scan, left it, came back later and the computer was on a page about SpyFalcon, which had downloaded itself to the computer and now has an icon flashing in the quicklaunch bar even though I removed the program. I remember previously that when posting HiJack logs we were supposed to use an Analyzer of some kind on the logs, but I didn't see that mentioned in the Walkthrough on the first page, so here is the HiJack scan by itself. Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

Download & install - CleanUp.exe (not recommended for WinXP64)

Download & extract it to it's own folder - smitRem.exe

Right click on this & choose "Save As..." FixSF.reg - FixSF.reg
Double click on FixSF.reg & allow it to merge into the Registry

Download and install Ewido Security Suite

• When installing, under "Additional Options",
  • uncheck - Install background guard
• Have Ewido update itself & then exit the program.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido


'UNPLUG'/DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet when you have finished downlaoding.
It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

Do a HijackThis scan & place a check next to these items and select "Fix checked":

Start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools> Delete a file on reboot...

1. In the popup box that appears, copy/paste in:
   • C :\Windows\System32\dxmpp.dll
2. Click the Open button.
3. Click YES when prompted to restart your computer.

* * * * * * RESTART WINDOWS IN SAFE MODE * * * * * * * * * *


1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the option to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

• SpyFalcon

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

If you have not done so already, please enable the viewing of Hidden files
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab.

• Tick - 'Show hidden files and folder'
• Untick - 'Hide file extensions for known types'
• Untick - 'Hide protected operating system files'
• Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

Locate and delete the following files/folders: (let me know if you fail to find/delete any)

• C:\Program Files\SpyFalcon\

* * * * * * PURGING TEMP FOLDERS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *


Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider initially to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:

• Delete Newsgroup cache
• Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
• Scan local drives for temporary files

4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
6. Do NOT reboot/logoff if prompted.

* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

* * * * * * RUNNING ADDITIONAL SCANNERS * * * * * * * * * * *


Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:

• "Security Info"
• "Warning Message"
• "Security Desktop"
• "Warning Homepage"
• "Desktop Uninstall"

Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)

• Click Scanner
• Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
• Click OK when prompted to clean files

With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:

• "Perform action on all infections"
• .Choose clean and click OK.

Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour. I suggest that you go grab a cup of coffee & do something else while you wait for it to complete.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
2. Click Scan Now
3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer

• If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
• Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
• Click on see report. Then click Save report

Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

OK, did everything as listed, in order. Only thing different was that before your reply was posted I had already removed the SpyFalcon program in the same manner listed, except not in Safe Mode and I had not manually deleted a SpyFlacon folder. When I went to do so in the walkthrough, the folder was not there. I still get an error message at start-up saying that it couldn't find the file C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\sstsmon.dll

Clear your IE cookies. Start>Settings>Control Panel>Internet Options>General tab>under Temporary files, click on Delete Cookies

Restart your computer in safe mode.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Acceleration Software or eAcceleration or Stopsign

It's rogueware or known to be rogueware in the past and we highly recommend that you uninstall it. Rogue or Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection. It would also be a second AntiVirus present on this system, which can cause conflicts and slowdowns.


Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

• Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:

    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK & have it scan My Computer
• Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
• Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
   Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
   • http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
4. After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
5. Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
6. There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
   • Downloaded Applets
     Downloaded Applications
     Other Files
7. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
   Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
8. Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Reset hidden/system files and folders

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View tab.
• Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
• Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
• Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point

• click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
• select the System Restore Tab
• tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
• click Apply
• then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update

• Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
• tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
• Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
• Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
    After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
• SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  
• SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
  Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  
• AD-AWARE
  Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  
• IE-SPYAD
  IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
    From within the folder, double-click install.bat
    Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
    Then return to the main menu.
    Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain
  
  
  
• MVPS HOST FILE
  The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
  • Download Host.zip - From within Host.zip, double click on MVPS.bat & allow it to run.
  
  
  
• ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
  It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Great thanks for all your help. my only other question is that i'm still having a software issue, but I don't believe it's related to spyware or malware or virus.
