adware popups, cmd.exe and task manager not working

hello,

i appear to have problems with adware, spyware that has progressively gotten worse over the last 24 hours.

it started when i tried to open the command prompt (cmd.exe located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe). I was given the error message "This application is being used by another program". I tried to open task manager, but it wouldn't open. I switched to safe mode; both the command prompt and task manager worked in safe mode.

I ran spybot, and got rid of what it threw up. I ran Norton, it threw up nothing. I ran trendmicro Housecall, which threw up some stuff, but couldn't remove anything. Since last night, I've had serious problems with adware.

This morning, I still have problems with adware popups. Task manager will not open. I still receive the same error message when I try to open the command prompt.

I downloaded highjackthis and now include the log. Hope someone can help me!

Thankyou very very much in advance!

Please do the following actions in the following sequence....

  1. Download and run - bfu.zip
  2. Checkmark the following boxes:
    • Use settings specified in script for the above option
    • Show log after script ends
  3. Click the Web button located on the top right corner
  4. Copy/Paste this url into the address bar of the Download script window:
    http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu
  5. Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.
  6. When it finishes running, click the Save button for a copy of the log
  7. Post the log created by the script when you have completed the fix

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:
  • Surf Sidekick 3
It may prompt about whether or not you are sure you want to remove this program. Reply Yes to this prompt. It will then uninstall the program.

If there is no Add/Remove Programs entry for this programs, click on Start, then Run and type the following in the Open: field:
  • C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe /u
and press the OK button.

A code will be displayed that it will ask you to enter. Enter this code.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Download & immediately run - L2MFix.exe
Click "Install" to extract the contents to a newly created folder.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • From the l2mfix folder, double click l2mfix.bat
  • Select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter ONCE.
Do NOT depress any keys on your keyboard until the tool request you to "press any key to reboot"

On the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder to locate log.txt.

If you receive an error - \system32\Autoexec.nt is not suitable for running MS-Dos applications, you will need to visit this website to download additional files.

In your next post, I require these logs:

1. Fresh Hijackthis log
2. BFU's log
3. L2Mfix's log

I installed the l2mfix as advised. I doubleclicked on the l2mfix.bat file. windows security center popped a message up in the bottom right of my screen giving a warning about .bat files. i chose to run it. i waited 5 minutes and nothing happened. i doubled clicked the l2mfix.bat file again and got the error message: "Another program is currently using this file." This is the same message I get when i try to open the command prompt.

Thus, I cannot proved the l2mfix log. Please advise.

Thanks in advance!

Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
  • When it re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.

******************************************************************

I performed the task re: Look2Me-Destroyer. However, I can't find the output text file. It is not located at C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt.

I have run a search and the only reference to Look2Me is the exe file on the desktop.

Please advise.

Once again, thanks in advance!

Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

* * * * * * ADDITIONAL DOWNLOADS * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Download & install CleanUp.exe (not recommended for WinXP64)

Download KillBox v2.0.0.175.exe (it's important that you get version v2.0.0.175)

WinPfind.zip - download & extract the contents to it's own folder at the root of drive C

Download and install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options",
    • uncheck - Install background guard
  • Have Ewido update itself & then exit the program.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido

'UNPLUG'/DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet when you have finished downlaoding.
It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

WinPFind v1.4.1 - Log file written to "WinPFind.Txt" in the WinPFind folder.
Scan completed on 02/03/2006 12:17:19

*****************************************************

Everything ran accordingly except the following problems were encountered:

1) When doing the first hijackthis scan and checking items, I received the following error when fixing these files:

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/17e07bf45db516f...p/RdxIE601.cab

and

O16 - DPF: {65E7DB1D-0101-4100-BD66-C5C78C917F93} - http://www.wildtangent.com/multiplay...mmp/wtinst.cab:

"Procedure 016 - DPF...: Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument."

2) You asked me to locate and delete the following files:

C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\

I successfully deleted Network Monitor. WildTangent and VCClient were not there.

Before I carried out these procedures, the computer displayed an error RUNDLL file relating to WildTangent on startup. This does not happen now.

Both the command prompt and the task manager are now operable! :-)

The internet appears to be running faster, however the computer seems slower on startup. Having said that, I have installed AdAware, avast!, and ewido and other things as required.

Please advise if there is anything else I am required to do.

Thanks again in advance.

If Norton is your main antivirus programs, please uninstall Avast. Ewido is okay to keep, as long you do not activate Ewido Guard. Even after the trial period has expired, Ewido can be still used.

Please read this post completely before begining the fix.

Right click on this & choose "Save As..." DelO15Domains.inf - DelO15Domains.inf
Right click on DelO15Domains.inf and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete the file afterwards.

Host.zip - Extract the contents into it's own folder. Double click MVPS.bat & allow it to run.

Right click on this & select 'Save As' - DNSManual.bat
Double-click DNSManual.bat & allow it to run.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 - Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items

IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

Please download the file attached - regdel.zip
Double-click the file within & allow it to merge with the Registry.
This will remove some malware entries from the Registry

* * * * * * RESTART WINDOWS IN SAFE MODE * * * * * * * * * *

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

ran everything as requested.

ran a new hijackthis scan. scan got stuck on 'O15 - Trusted Zone Enumeration', and couldn't / didn't complete. No log was produced.

Please advise, and once again, thankyou very much in advance.

Deleted avast!. Computer a bit quicker on start up. cmd.exe and task manager both still okay.

Thanks,

SpywareBlaster & IE-SpyAd placed a lot of new entries into the 015 range. That's why it'll take Hijackthis a bit longer to enumerate those entries. It hasnt hung.

Please try it again.

Your system is clean. Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE - (System Volume Information folder)
Go to Start >> Run - type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter
    • Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
    • Click Apply
Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click OK

  2. DISABLE THE VIEWING OF SYSTEM FILES
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
    • Untick - Show hidden files and folder
    • Tick - Hide file extensions for known types
    • Tick - Hide protected operating system files
Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

  3. SECURING INTERNET EXPLORER
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    • Select the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Select Custom Level .
        • Change 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to Prompt
        • Change 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to Disable
        • Change 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable
        • Change 'Installation of desktop items' to Prompt
        • Change 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to Prompt
        • Change 'Navigate sub-frames across different domains' to Prompt
        • When all these changes have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Select OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  4. ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  5. FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here.

  6. Microsoft Windows Update
Visit windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  7. SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  8. AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • Google Toolbar - Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay.
Have a safe & happy computing day.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
