Please help me I'm panicking!

Hello, I'm not a techie and just registered here. I've been getting 'filost' pop-ups recently and now I notice my system is running slower and slower everyday. My CPU usage always surge up to 100% and then everything just hang in mid-air! I've run Ad-Aware and here's my HijackThis Log. I tried looking for solutions everywhere and I know this is not an uncommon problem but I don't understand the solutions so please help me! I'm getting desperate. Thanks!

Don't Panic! We can get you cleaned up, but this will take a bit of time.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running.
Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility.

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:
  • Delete Newsgroup cache
  • Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:
  • "Perform action on all infections"
  • Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193423} -
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193429} -
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-615111193427} -
O16 - DPF: {64311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab
O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34546} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

c:\eied_s7.cab
c:\ex.cab
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Restart in normal mode.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

Download Host.zip - From within Host.zip, double click on MVPS.bat & allow it to run.

Download SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items

Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Please return with logs from:

Ewido

Some programs are for this infection, some are for your future protection...yes, please, download and run them all.

There are no stupid questions, honest.

If you have to ask about 64bit OS, you likely don't have it. If you wanna be sure, go to Start>Run and type winver then press Enter. A box will open. It will say 64bit OS on it somewhere if you have one.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start->Run - type SERVICES.MSC & then click on the OK button
  • Locate the service - Aluria Security Center Spyware Eliminator Service
  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Under the General tab:
  • Stop the service by using the Stop button.
  • Change the Startup type to Disabled & then click on the OK button
Then start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools...> Delete an NT service...
  • In the popup box that appears, copy/paste ASCService Click on the OK button

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{9AFB8248-617F-460D-9366-D71CDEDA3179}]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

MyWebSearch
Aluria Software - it’s rogueware and we highly recommend that you uninstall them. Rogue or Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection. See this site for more information.
.

Do not reboot at this time if asked.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

O23 - Service: Aluria Security Center Spyware Eliminator Service (ASCService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Aluria Security Center\ascserv.exe

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start>Run then copy and paste, or type the following, then press Enter:

regsvr32 /u occache.dll

Delete these files/folders if present:

C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\f3initialsetup1.0.0.15.inf
C:\WINDOWS\LASTGOOD\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\eied.inf
C:\WINDOWS\switchagreement.txt
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MyWebSearch
C:\Documents and Settings\xp\Cookies\xp@tribalfusion[1].txt
C:\Program Files\FunWebProducts
C:\WINDOWS\LastGood\Downloaded Program Files\eied.inf
C:\WINDOWS\LastGood\Downloaded Program Files\start.inf
C:\Program Files\Aluria Security Center

Go to Start>Run then copy and paste, or type the following, then press Enter:

regsvr32 occache.dll

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot in normal mode.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Post a new HJT log, and the Kapsersky scan log.

How is your system behaving now, please?

Here are the HJT and Kaspersky logs. There're no filost or random pop-ups now and I think it's kind of faster than before. I'm not sure but so far so good.

Please use Symantec's guide to remove the Norton Quarantine files.

Delete this file:

C:\Downloads\software\Azureus_2.3.0.4_Win32.setup.exe

If it resists deletion, boot to safe mode and delete it from there.

Other than that, your logs appear clean. The other finds are in System Restore points, which will will flush shortly.

Well done. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain
  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip - From within Host.zip, double click on MVPS.bat & allow it to run.
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available:
  • Avast!
  • AVG

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Oh sorry for double posting. What do I do with the registry files I saved earlier? Delete them?

Hi estara -

Do you mean the 'delete.reg' file we created?

Yes, it can be deleted.

The backup, if you created one before using 'delete.reg', can be renamed to a .txt extension, and saved somewhere out of the way.

In a week or so, if all is well, that txt file can then be deleted.
