Download and run Blacklight
After you start the program and accept the license, you should see the first step (Figure 1), which lets you scan for hidden items. Note that you must have local administrative privileges to run the program. Click Scan. BlackLight will use Windows Explorer (the desktop process) to scan for hidden items. Your anti-virus software or personal firewall might display a warning that says Blacklight (blbeta.exe) is trying to manipulate the Windows Explorer process (explorer.exe). If you want to continue the scan, you should allow BlackLight to do this When it finishes, click Next. You may get a screen similar to the picture below. Click on Close BlackLight beta would create a log file "fsbl-<date-and-time>.log". By default, the log file is in the same directory as the executable. Please post the log

Download and install CleanUp!
Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: Click "Options..." Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO. * * * * * * * * Then, perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
Copy the results of the Online Scan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log

This is indeed interesting. Please describe to me as to how IT manifests itself.

When visiting certain sites for the first time after my cookies and internet files have been deleted, the Microsoft? pop up blocker comes on (yellow strip underneath the address bar) then for split second a new window appears then disappears titled 'about blank' followed by the winfixer confirm box and a small blank window in the far right of the screen which cannot be closed.
I then have to shutdown Explorer in task manager as the yes/no and close options in the confirm box just take me to the winfixer website. If I then return to the same website I get nothing until my cookies are cleared once again. Edit* The small window is actually titled Microsoft explorer error. Well this is one that comes off the top of my head which is a non-porographic free Wallpaper site based in the UK.
http://www.sexydesktop.co.uk/index_cars.htm I've put this one in my favourites to use as a test. And this is the site which I am certain gave me the problem in the first place while ironically looking up how to remove winfixer for a friend. w w w. download junction.com (spaces inserted to prevent a direct link) |

I suggest that you get a better pop up blocker. The first site, sexydesktop, tried to spring a pop up on me while the 2nd site, download junction is okay.
Your issues with these sites are related to a single pop up. That is uncharacteristic of spyware/adware. They dont simply stop at only one pop up. They dump tons of it on you :) If you must visit such sites, I recomend that you use an alternate browser like Opera or Firefox.

Yes I think I will change my browser. It was just the fact that when I return to the site again I get nothing no pop up whatsoever but as you have said it happened to you too which I suppose must mean its on the site and not in my machine.
Thanks for all your help Subs. |
