Error=633 modem in use or not configured

Hello,

When I launch IE at first it appears fine but after surfing 1 or two pages it then repeatedly gives me the Server Not Found page.
When I disconnect and relaunch IE it gives the following message:

ERROR =633: The modem (or other connecting device) is in use or is not configured properly

Also at times the Dial-up connection box opens with the dialing program identified as PCHButton.exe
There is a "Modem Lock" application supplied by BT which protects against rogue diallers but this will not hold the enable setting.

I have run adaware, spybot and avg and found adware, spyware and viruses, all of which now seem to be clear.
I have also updated from the Microsoft site as far as I can though I have had some problems. I'm not sure why.
It is a legal copy of XP as it downloaded a verification procedure and went ahead. I had also begun to download SP2
but I use a Dial-up and I might get it downloaded by this time next year! :)
When I connect to the Internet the automatic updating seems to run as I can see it in the system tray
but it never seems to complete.

Here is the HijackThis log -------- (thanks in advance)

Hello Raggedy,

Please copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

---------------------------

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click OK.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

---------------------------

Run a scan in HijackThis. 'Check' each of the following if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...rch.yahoo.com/
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {965A592F-8EFA-4250-8630-7960230792F1} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pjaimjxdto] C:\WINDOWS\System32\erdfhjzn.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [velmp] C:\WINDOWS\velmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adstartup] C:\WINDOWS\System32\automove.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [t32] C:\WINDOWS\kltse.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jawa32] C:\WINDOWS\jawa32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Jawa32] C:\WINDOWS\jawa32.exe

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

---------------------------

Delete the following Files if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ erdfhjzn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ velmp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ automove.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ kltse.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ jawa32.exe

---------------------------

Reboot into Normal Mode

---------------------------

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Please post that log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello Ried. Thanks for your time.

Forgot to mention in the post that I can't get into Safe Mode. After F8 and choosing Safe Mode it just boots into Normal Mode.

Should I carry on with the rest?

Follow Ried's instructions till you get to the part after doing the HijackThis fixes.
Then reboot & proceed to delete the files listed.

Hi again Ried. Sorry it took a while to get back. I work long hours.

Followed your instructions but couldn't get the Panda ActiveScan to work.
When I clicked the "Scan Now" button, nothing happened.

Still getting the 633 Error when I disconnect and try to reconnect to the Internet.
And the PCHButton.exe is still occasionally trying to connect.

Ran HiJackThis again and here is the log

Hi Raggedy,

Download BootSafe and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the BootSafe icon to start the program.
  • Select "Safe Mode - Minimal".
  • Click the Reboot button
  • When you have completed your tasks, simply run BootSafe again and select the Normal Restart option and click the Reboot button and your computer will reboot in Normal Mode.

------------------------

Run a scan in HijackThis. 'Check' the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jawa322] C:\WINDOWS\jawa32.exe

------------------------

Delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\ jawa32.exe

------------------------

Reboot back into Normal Mode. Let's try another online scanner:

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

Hi Raggedy,

How much time do you have before it restarts? See if you can sneak in the following:

Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt

1. At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

2. Press Enter

3. This will start the "Welcome to System Restore" screen. Choose 'Restore my computer to an earlier time.'

4. On the left hand side, you will see a calendar with bolded dates. Choose the date closest to before running BootSafe, and continue to follow the on screen prompts.

NOTE: If your restore point is prior to the fixes you performed on 2/22, you will have to repeat the steps outlined in Post #2.

If the above was successful, please run another scan with HijackThis and post the log here.

Hi Ried.

Safe Mode with Command Prompt didn't work but there was an option Restore Last Known Good Configuration.
I chose that and the machine booted into Safe Mode.

Ran HJT and Fixed 04 HKLM ..... jawa32.exe

C:\Windows\jawa32.exe didn't exist.
There are 2 other files with a .bin extension (jawa32vs & jawa32e) which I left alone.

I ran Kaspersky and HJT and here are the reports. Again, thanks for your time.

Nice job Raggedy,

Clear your Temp and Temporary Internet Files: Go to Start > Run and type cleanmgr in the box. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files checked' and click OK.

If you still cannot get into Safe Mode, try deleting these from Normal Mode.

There are 2 other files with a .bin extension (jawa32vs & jawa32e) which I left alone.
Go ahead and delete those along with these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ lmf32v.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ SWin32.dll

Reboot your system.

How is your system behaving now? Can you get into Safe Mode yet?

Hi again Ried,

Can't get into Safe Mode. Deleted the files on Normal Mode, rebooted but still can't get into Safe Mode. Should I try the BootSafe again?

Then let's just disable that PCHButton. NO, don't use BootSafe again.

Run a scan with HijackThis and 'check' the following entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Acme.PCHButton] C:\PROGRA~1\HPPAVI~1\Pavilion\XPHWWBP4\plugin\bin\ PCHButton.exe

Now, make sure all other windows are closed and click Fix Checked.

This will disable that button from running at startup and as a background process.

I'd also like you to do the following:

Click Start>Run and type in sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /) and let it scan for missing/corrupt files. This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. If it finds any problems, it will prompt you for the Windows XP Install disc so have it handy.

Please let me know how everything goes.

Fixed the PCHButton and the sfc /scannow is running at the moment.
If it finds anything there will be a delay here. This machine belongs to a friend who is even less computer savvy than me ! (yes it's possible) LOL

I'll have to get in touch with him and HOPE that he has the install disk.
In the meantime, thanks again. Please bear with me. :-)

sfc seems to have run through without finding anything.
I'm on my own machine (W2K) at the moment and am going to disconnect and try the problem one's connection now.

Hi Ried.

Not much change I'm afraid.
Still getting the modem in use message when I disconnect and try to reconnect.
Don't seem to be getting the page not found any more though.

AVG updated and I ran a scan. No virus found. Is that odd? That Kaspersky found infections but AVG didn't?
4 files had the result "Change".

All in C:\Windows\System32
kernel.dll
user32.dll
shell32.dll
ntoskrnl.exe

Windows automatic updater seems also to be working. Updates have been downloaded but I
haven't installed them yet. Should I?

Ran HJT again and here's the log

Please do so immediately.

Each AV program looks at the system in different ways. No one AV will find everything which is why it's always a good idea to periodically scan your system from the 'outside' with an online scanner.

We'll take one more deep look to rule out malware before I send you off to the Hardware section.

Download StartDreck http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/StartDreck.zip

Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Config'
Press 'mark all'

Uncheck the following boxes only:
System/Running Process -> List Modules
System/Drivers -> NT Services
System/Drivers -> NT Kernel- and FS-drivers
Press 'OK'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread.

Right click on http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post.

Hi Ried.

Thanks once again for your time. Here are the Startreck and SilentRunners logs.
I really hope there's something here. Hardware section sounds ominous !

Ried, don't know if this has any significance but I've just updated the AdAware definitions. They updated OK but as they did a new IE window opened saying "Error Detected - Microsoft Internet Explorer" with this URL

That is quite helpful and quite a surprise as I'm not seeing any evidence whatsoever of winfixer nor any of it's other components in any of these logs we've run.

As a precaution, I'd like you to run this tool. I don't expect it to find anything as there is no evidence of it's presence in your log, but it is well known to coincide with winfixer. The running of this tool will do no harm if this infection is not present.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

---------------------------

Please run this as well.

Download WinPFInd http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/oldtimer/WinPFind.zip and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder. Do Not run it yet.

Inside C:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.! Once the Scan is Complete it will make a txt file (log) of what was found. Save that log and post it here.

Restart one more time back into Normal Mode, run a scan with HijackThis and save the log to post here.
