Question The nvctrl.exe monster that won't die - Please Help!

Hello,

I've been hijacked for the past 2 days by what started off as the nvctrl.exe and mssearchnet.exe viruses. Through a variety of programs including ad-aware, SmitRem, Ewido, Cleanup, Spybot Search & Destroy, Hijack This, Dr. Web, Trojan Scan, and Bitefinder, many trips to Safe Mode Land, and much reading of other posts, I have removed both of those files from my system folder and currently at least seem to have control over my homepage and have removed the added frames that were showing up in my browser, but I still haven't managed to kill the thing completely.

My current remaining issues are as follows:

I receive regular and random popups advertising anti-virus programs claiming I am infected (no kidding, really?)

My desktop is mostly covered by a program that displays the following message: "WARNING YOU'RE IN DANGER!!! YOU'RE VISITING ILLEGAL PORN WEBSITES! Your computer is full of traces! Your IP address logged. Security Risk Level - high You're being watched and all your activity is tracked YOUR LIFE IS IN DANGER! CLICK HERE TO PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY" The last line is a hyperlink to http://www.removetracks.info/?adv=164&sub=hp4, Below that is a button reading "Protect Your Privacy Now!" and links to http://www.removetracks.info/?adv=164&sub=dc4.

Any help with this would be appreciated more than you could ever know.

My most recent Hijack This Log is listed below.

Thank you.

When you ran smitRem, it would have created a log - C:\smitfiles.txt.
I would like to have a look at that.

Interestingly enough, after a lot of repetition, I was finally able to get internet explorer to behave. I have my homepage, no popups, and no interruptions. As for the desktop, the program has now changed from red with threatening statements to just a blank white cavas. It covers everything but the desktop icons and the tiniest sliver at the top of the screen. When I right click it and select properties, I see a URL of file://C:\DOCUME~1\DANIEL~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\0779ceaba.html, but I could not locate such a file, even making everything visible in my folders. If you know of a way to remove this final remnant, I would be forever grateful. I am including an up-to-date HJT log below. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

* * * * * * ADDITIONAL DOWNLOADS * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Download & install - CleanUp.exe (not recommended for WinXP64)

'UNPLUG'/DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet when you have finished downlaoding.
It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

* * * * * * UN-INSTALLING PROGRAMS * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:
  • ViewPoint
Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

* * * * * * DISABLING SERVICES * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Click Start -> Run - type SERVICES.MSC & then click on the OK button
  1. Locate the service - WindowInstallSystem (a1cdd0ce23csvr)
  2. Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
    - Change the Startup type to Disabled & then click on the Apply button
    - Stop the service by using the Stop button.
  3. Then start HiJackThis & go to Config... -> Misc.Tools -> Delete an NT service
  4. In the popup box that appears, copy/paste a1cdd0ce23csvr
  5. Click on the OK button & answer No if prompted to reboot

* * * * * * FIXING ENTRIES WITH HIJACKTHIS * * * * * * * * * *

Do a HijackThis scan & place a check next to these items and select "Fix checked":

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O23 - Service: WindowInstallSystem (a1cdd0ce23csvr) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.exe

* * * *

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Website
Under the 'Web pages' box, Uncheck everything present.

  • Delete Newsgroup cache
  • Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
  • Scan local drives for temporary files

  2. Click the Open button.
  3. Click YES when prompted to restart your computer.

* * * * * *

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

* * * * * * CHECK LIST * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

In your next post, please include fresh logs from:

I started the process but when I got a few steps in, I ran into a problem. When searching SERVICES.MSC, I couldn't locate WindowInstallSystem (a1cdd0ce23csvr). I double clicked every program to make sure I wasn't missing it. I also made sure to restore the files via HJT after realizing that I may have already deleted it. Moving on to the next step, the program is definitely running and needs to be disabled and stopped, but I cannot locate it. I exported the SERVICES.MSC list and am including it below. Please advise how to proceed. Thank you.

The Kaspersky On-Line Scanner is doing it's thing right now, but won't be complete before I need to leave for work. I will finish this set of instructions when I return this evening and reply as soon as possible. As for the current status, my desktop is visible now thanks to change made to the customize desktop options, but the wallpaper is still not visible. No other noticable changes have occured as of yet. Thanks again. I will get back to you in about 10 hours.

I have completed the scan and am ready with my update. As for problems, as I said, I couldn't locate the WindowInstallSystem program to disable or stop it. Also, since I deleted Viewpoint, I did not actually have the HJT entry to delete - "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe"

Currently, the only noticable change since before going through these steps is that now I can see the desktop unobstructed, but the wallpaper is still not there. I'm including both the log from Kaspersky and a new HJT log below. Thank you again. Let me know how I should proceed.

Please download RootKitRevealer.zip

Unzip it to the desktop, run it, and click Scan. This will generate a log file.

Please post the entire contents of the log file in your next reply.

I'm including the log below. I thought I should also mention that the computer is now having a difficult time recognizing the desktop when I try to save things to it.

Download & launch KillBox v2.0.0.175.exe (it's important that you get version v2.0.0.175)

Select the following options
  • replace on Reboot
  • Use dummy
Use your mouse to select all the filenames listed below & then right-click & select Copy
  • C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.ini
* Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard
* Click the RED X button.
* Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
* Click Yes at the 'Pending Operations prompt'.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Please post a fresh HJT log when you're done

I used ran the missingfilesetup program, but still when I try to complete the KillBox program, it gets as far as verifying registry and then comes up with an error reading "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!"

Please advise. Thanks again.

Please reboot to Safe Mode & try doing Killbox from there.

Let's try another tool..

Download and run Blacklight

After you start the program and accept the license, you should see the first step (Figure 1), which lets you scan for hidden items. Note that you must have local administrative privileges to run the program.

Click Scan. BlackLight will use Windows Explorer (the desktop process) to scan for hidden items. Your anti-virus software or personal firewall might display a warning that says Blacklight (blbeta.exe) is trying to manipulate the Windows Explorer process (explorer.exe). If you want to continue the scan, you should allow BlackLight to do this

When it finishes, click Next. You may get a screen similar to the picture below.

For hidden entries found, choose for Blacklight to rename these:

C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.exe
C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.ini

The tool will ask if you want to reboot (restart) choose yes.
After you have rebooted post back with a fresh hijackthis log

I just finished the scan and wanted to make sure I was good to go before proceeding. The hidden items found were a1cdd0ce23c.exe, a1cdd0ce23c.ini, and Rundll32.exe. Do I need to rename anything seeing as they already came up with the desired names? Also, should I do anything special about the Rundll32.exe file? I will wait to restart until I have heard back. Thank you.

Have HijackThis fix these entries. They should go easily now that we have nuetralised the files.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [a1cdd0ce23c] C:\WINDOWS\System32\a1cdd0ce23c.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [a1cdd0ce23c] C:\WINDOWS\System32\a1cdd0ce23c.exe
O23 - Service: WindowInstallSystem (a1cdd0ce23csvr) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.exe (file missing)

Then, locate those three files we renamed. They should be named as:

C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.exe.ren
C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.ini.ren
rundll32.exe.ren

Zip/Archived all 3 files & place the zipped file as an attachment in your next post. I would like send them in to the lab so that we may know more of it. You may delete them once you have done so.

Please let me know how your machine is behaving now.

This is what happened. I ran Hijack This and deleted the 3 files. Then I went ahead and located the two a1cdd0ce23c files planning on zipping them. Unfortunately, my McAfee was running and the second I clicked on either file, they were instantly deleted as viruses without even asking me. So I regret to inform you that I couldn't copy them for further studying. I'm sorry about that.

Next, I tried to locate the rundll32.exe.ren file. Unfortunately, after running a search of my entire hard drive, it couldn't be located.

I thought to recheck the Hijack This and I found that O23 - Service: WindowInstallSystem (a1cdd0ce23csvr) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\a1cdd0ce23c.exe (file missing) had resurfaced. I checked SERVICES.MSC and found that WindowInstallSystem was now present, so I disabled it and tried to delete it via HJT again, this time successfully.

Unfortunately, despite my joy at removing these pesky foes, I still have that annoying white block over my desktop the second I recheck the box in the display properties customize desktop menu.

I am at a loss. I hope you're less lost than I.

Just in case, and possibly out of habit, here's a current HJT log:
