Spyware found- browser not connecting all the time
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.
My browser was not connecting properly to internet and computer was running slowly so I thought spyware was probably the culprit. I am trying to get my computer cleaned up and running virus/spyware free. Also it seems too many processes might be running. It starts up with over 60. I followed the Rules of procedure before getting to this point. Panda found 1 virus and multiple spyware items before cleaning and disinfecting. Ad-Aware and SpyBot each found additional ones as well. I ran these in Safe Mode to hopefully prevent return. I then updated my Windows XP for security purposes. Below is my HJT log after doing everything I know how to do: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 1:56:22 PM, on 2/13/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware\TPSrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe c:\program files\panda software\panda titanium 2006 antivirus + antispyware\firewall\PNMSRV.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\DVDRAMSV.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware\PavFnSvr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Panda Software\PavShld\pavprsrv.exe C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware\pavsrv51.exe C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware\AVENGINE.EXE C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware\PsImSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\SMAgent.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TME3\Tmesbs32.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TME3\Tmesrv31.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wdfmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\ltmoh\Ltmoh.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\00THotkey.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TME3\TMERzCtl.EXE C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TME3\TMEEJME.EXE C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TME3\TMESBS32.EXE C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\DualPointUtility\TEDTray.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apntex.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\TFNF5.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Wireless Hotkey\TosHKCW.exe C:\Program Files\Toshiba\ConfigFree\NDSTray.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ezSP_Px.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Controls\TFncKy.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\TPWRTRAY.EXE C:\toshiba\ivp\ism\pinger.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\browser\ybrwicon.exe C:\PROGRA~1\SBCSEL~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\browser\ycommon.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware\APVXDWIN.EXE C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RAMASST.exe C:\Program Files\Panda Software\Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware\WebProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Linksys\Wireless-G Notebook Adapter\OdHost.exe C:\Program Files\SBC Self Support Tool\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\Program Files\Linksys\Wireless-G Notebook Adapter\WPC54Cfg.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIndex.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopCrawl.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\Hijack This\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://yahoo.sbc.com/dsl R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://yahoo.sbc.com/dsl R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1 O3 - Toolbar: &Yahoo! Hi Uncle Buck and thank you for your patience.
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. There’s not very much left in your log so we’ll do some cleaning and see what turns up. Once you’re clean we can have a look at the running processes. Have you added additional programmes recently or upgraded any hardware? BroadJump - I see you have BroadJump on your system. This is the newer name for BroadJump Foundation Client (BJCFD) from BroadJump.com, now Motive. The software collects information on your Internet activity and sends it to your ISP so that your ISP can serve you advertisements related to the type of sites you visit. I suggest that you carry out the fixes indicated below but I would approach your ISP as soon as possible and ask them how to remove it and why they installed it in the first place. Do not attempt to uninstall the program yourself. Downloads Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later. Download Ewido Security Suite
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido. When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido. Reboot Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key (or the appropriate key for your system) until the menu appears). HijackThis Entries Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any) R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. CleanUp! *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW! Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows: Click Options Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp! Check the following:
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these BEFORE running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility. Ewido Run Ewido with it's updated definitions (...it's important that all windows must be closed)
NOTE: Ewido scan will require at least an hour. Reboot Reboot your system in Normal Mode. Online Scan Reboot Reboot your system in Normal Mode. Online Scan Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Logs required Ewido log Kaspersky log HijackThis log Please also advise how your system is performing now.

Glaswegian,
Thank you for your help. I will begin going through the steps right now. It may take me a while to get through all of that. Quick question. Is there no other way to get rid of BroadJump besides contacting the ISP? How would they have put that on my computer anyway? Just looking for the fastest and easiest ways to get back to a clean system. Thanks in advance and I'll let you know as I get done with the steps above. CG |

I'm afraid not - any attempt by us to uninstall it would probably leave you with a useless PC - best to get your ISPs advice.

oK, per your instructions I have gone through the steps above.
1. I removed Broadjump with the help of my ISP 2. I ran Clean Up (Safe Mode) 3. I ran Ewido (Safe Mode) 4. I ran Kaspersky Ewido detecting nothing therefore I do not have a log for it. Kaspersky, however, detected several viruses/trojans that you can see in the log below. As far as I know, it offered no opportunity to clean these things. After all of the above, my computer is still running slow, I am receiving pop-ups to buy seemingly rogue anti-spyware products, and I cannot connect to the internet using my wireless connection. Looks like I still have some work to do. Here are the Kaspersky and HJT logs below per your request. (Actually I have to close everything and re-run the HJT to save as text and will post in a separate reply). Hi again UB.
The Kaspersky log is showing viruses in your System Restore points - they are out the way just now and we’ll deal with them later. Everything else is showing clean, so we need to dig a bit deeper. Downloads Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop. Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop. *Note* Alternate download sites for smitrem... http://www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...ar/smitRem.exe Download SilentRunners. Right click & choose Save As --> Save it to Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (like your anti-virus or anti-spyware programs -- if you're going to disable these, then disconnect from the Internet for this step). Double-click Silent Runners to run it. This will take a few minutes, and will create a file called "Startup Programs" followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all its contents here in your next post. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. File Deletions Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist. C:\WINDOWS\system32\intell321.exe C:\WINDOWS\svrrun.exe C:\windows\osaupd.exe C:\windows\tool1.exe C:\windows\tool2.exe C:\windows\tool3.exe C:\windows\tool4.exe C:\windows\tool5.exe C:\windows\System32\shell386.exe C:\windows\System32\winapi32.dll C:\windows\System32\winlfl32.dll C:\windows\System32\mswinxml.dll C:\windows\System32\mswinup32.dll C:\windows\System32\mswinf32.exe C:\windows\System32\mswinf32.dll C:\windows\System32\mswinb32.dll C:\windows\System32\mswinb32.exe C:\windows\System32\intxt.exe Please also create an Uninstall list.
Can you tell me what anti spyware products are being offered? Any problems with your mouse ‘freezing’ or the "hourglass cursor flashing"?

Here is the smitfile and the uninstall list. To answer your question about the spyware, I am no longer getting the spyware pop-ups that I was. Also, I have had no problems with my mouse freezing. Thanks again in advance and let me know what the next steps are. Thanks

Hi again UB
Well done - your system is now clean ![]() Is everything running OK now? If so, just a few housekeeping items to take care of. Reset Hidden/System Files To reset your hidden and system files:
System Restore To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This will create a new Restore Point. IMPORTANT!!! Please ensure that Windows is patched against the WMF exploit. This is a dangerous vulnerability that opens the door to multiple infections; and the likely reason you are now infected. Visit Window's Update to get the KB912919 patch. Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. AD-AWARE Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. IE-SPYAD IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here. MVPS HOSTS FILE The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. ALTERNATE BROWSERS Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer Firefox Opera FIREWALLS A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use: Sygate Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm Tiny Personal Firewall Outpost Firewall ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: Anti-Spyware Tutorial Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available: Avast! AVG It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. OTHER PROTECTION Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software. In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL. MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER. Keep clean and enjoy your computing! Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Glaswegian,
Thanks so much for the help. The computer seems to be functioning quite a bit better with none of the problems I was having before. I installed the Avast software and that seems to have caused problems with my Outlook so I changed some of the features. I also have installed a few of the other programs. Hopefully this will keep me from getting into the same problems in the future. Thanks again. |
