Computer Running Slow
Hi,
I am hoping you can help me. I initially posted earlier today on the Windows XP board. My computer is so very slow that I am just now finishing up all the steps. The scanning took the longest. After all the scans...I'm still running slow. I have no idea what the culprit is. When I say slow I mean: --Computer is slow to boot --Browsing is okay but FREEZES a lot on and off while browsing, opening programs,etc... --Can sometimes hear a beep in background as if something is opening or closing (I hope that makes sense) Very high CPU usage---The two programs draining the CPU are TCPSVCS.exe and Rundll32.exe--earlier today each of these programs were running at 50% each but later and currently it seems that the TCPSVCS.exe is using 98-99% of CPU on it's own. This all started a couple of days ago Here is my HJT Log: Thanks for any and all help. I will patiently await a response. You have the Blaster worm. I'm not sure this is the cause of all your issues, but let's do some cleaning. We may send you back to XP forum afterward.
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. I see you have Ewido already. Please update it's definitions, and run a scan where I have placed it in this fix. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido. The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility. Run Cleanup! using the following configuration: 1. Click Options... 2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp! 3. Uncheck the following:
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted. * CleanUp! will not create any backups!! Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: WeatherBug - it's adware Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
** Ewido scan would require at least an hour. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [windows auto update] msblast.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe 1 Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist: msblast.exe<<<Find Via Start>Search C:\Program Files\AWS Restart in normal mode. Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. Please return with logs from: Ewido Panda HJT

Thanks Bob
Thank you for responding. I've been trying to correct the problems of my computer all day and I think I finally fixed most of them.
FYI: I did do the Ewido scan earlier and it found the Blaster Worm. Oddly last evening I ran Ewido twice (once in safe moda and once in normal mode) and nothing came up. I deleted the blaster worm. Also there were a few negligible items found...deleted those also. Also, my CPU was running high--it seems as though the TCPSVCS.exe process was utilizing all of my CPU--which made it run at 100%. I was told by a friend to go to Add Remove Windows Components and in Networking Services (?) uncheck the TCP/IP box. I did that and rebooted and now my computer is working perfectly. I posted this over on the XP board earlier. What is your opinion about this? So I should start doing a cleanup I think? and go through the other steps. Earlier I had a problem doing a Panda Scan. FOr some reason it says that I am not able to do the scan. I posted that here earlier too. I thought I'd figured it out but apparently not. I still can't use the program. Thanks for all of your help in advance and I hope I didn't post too much info for you to digest. TC |

TC -
If the work you did was after your HJT log, then post a new HJT log. If it wasn't, go through the steps I outlined, as Blaster is clearly in that log. The registry entry may yet be present. While I appreciate that you're trying to self-help, and get your system running ASAP, it makes my job harder trying to figure out where we are. What exact error message are you getting from Panda? I'm only going to address the malware issue for this moment. Trying to deal with too many issues at once is unproductive.

I understand
You are right. I definitely understand your point. Sorry to have confused you.
I've started doing the steps just as you posted them. I just finished with the EWIDO scan--which came up clean. MS Blaster was not in any folders/files Now I'm about to try PandaScan to see if I get the same message again. I will report back as soon as I get it done. I did get the same message. This is the error message I get: Possible causes of this error are: Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded. Problems with the Internet connection. The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,... No problem with Internet connection for sure. Could be the Active X thing..I'm not sure what that is. Thanks for your help again. TC Last edited by techchallenged; 02-13-2006 at 04:37 PM. |

Hi TC -
That looks good, but I'd sure like to see an online scan log. Let's see if it's your ActiveX settings: Please check your ActiveX security settings (Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel -> Internet Options, Security Tab -> Internet -> Custom Level). ActiveX controls and plug-ins * Download signed ActiveX controls (Prompt) * Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Prompt) * Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable) * Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enabled) (This actually refers to Java and Flash, not ActiveX) * Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting (Prompt) Try that, and attempt the online scan once again.

Okay Bob. Sorry for the delay. I'm just now able to get back to the computer. I will follow the directions you gave and try to download the ActiveScan again.
Ewido came up clean. You don't need me to post that one do you? TC |

Whew!
Bob,
I had a tough night again. I was not able to get onto the internet all night or even earlier this morning. I went to the Panda Site after following the instructions you gave me on configuring Active X settings. I set it just as you suggested. I tried to download the Active Scan. Still could not do so. Have no idea why I can't because I know that in the past I have used Panda's scan on this very computer but that would have been over a year ago and I since deleted it from my computer. Anyway, after trying unsuccessfully 10s of times to download the active scan I decided to try to download their Titanium Antivirus/Spyware software--which is free for 30 days. I wanted to just get a scan from them so that I could show it to you. I downloaded that product 'semi-successfully'. I say that because after I downloaded it it just took my computer down. My wireless system started acting up. I couldn't log out. It was slow to log out and when I tried to log back in the 'Start' toolbar would show up. Only my desktop. So I couldn't figure out how to get to my settings for my wireless connection or for anything else. So, this morning I just thought to try to bootup in Safe mode and through that process I uninstalled the Panda Software and voila! I was able to log in normally again. My computer doesn't like Panda??? I don't know why it will not download from their site. It's crazy. Can you suggest another scan that is good? Thanks so much Bob. I REALLY appreciate your help. TC |

Well, now...that's a strange one. See if Kaspersky will let you in, otherwise I'll want to look at something else.
Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

Hi again Bob,
I've completed the Kaspersky scan. It came back clean the first time. However, I realized that I did not choose "Extended" in the Scan Settings at that time. So just to be sure I'm really clean I've launched the scan again... with the Extended scan. After this is done I still have a question about TCP/IP and whether or not it is needed. TC |

It's clean Bob. Nothing was found. I'm hoping this means that I really have no real problem.
My computer is running fine with the exception that I could not download Active Scan. CPU is low again thank heavens.... I think I'm okay now. What do you think? TC |

Not sure what to think about Panda right now, but clean is clean.
Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Create a new System Restore point
Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

Thanks so very much again Bob.
I printed out everything and I will go through all of the steps as soon as possible. I do have a couple of other issues. One I am taking care of now via phone. It seems that my Linksys wireless adapter is 'acting up'. After I responded earlier the computer just shut off on its own and a blue screen came up that told me that I should check any hardware or software that I recently installed. I received this message before for the Linsksys adapter. The tech is helping me with that problem now and also setting the security for the router...OH BOY! I feel much like your avatar....lol I also wanted to know if TCP/IP is needed? I was having problems with that utilizing all of my CPU before and I was told by a friend that it wasn't needed and to go to the 'Add remove microsoft components' and deselect it under Networking services. I did that and my computer started to run fast again. I just want to know if it is needed or not because I get conflicting info on the internet when I google it. I think that is all I have now. Saying Thank You really isn't enough but I want to thank you for all of your help : ) . TC |

Hi TC -
Please take those other issues over to our Networking forum. The experts there will be better equipped to address your questions. Give them the complete rundown, that you've been here, and all is well from a malware standpoint.
