I've noticed system-wide slow down and I suspect I've got either some spyware or virus problems going on. I previously had problems with a "Daily Weather Forecast" folder in my program files, but it's since been removed. When running the hijackthis log before I noticed this:
"O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Daily Weather Forecast] C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast\weather.exe" but it's not located where it describes. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, IntelPentium M processor 1.6GHz, 504 MB or RAM. Also I don't know if this information is needed, but I'm using IconPackageer and Logon Studio currently as well. A review of the log would be appreciated and any help or suggestions are welcome. Hi again
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Please download Cleanup! or use this (Alternate Link) if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later. Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK. Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears). Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if they exist): Daily Weather Forecast Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following =================================================== O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Daily Weather Forecast] C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast\weather.exe =================================================== Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. Delete the following Folder indicated in BLUE if it still exists. C:\Program Files\Daily Weather Forecast Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows: Click Options Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp! Check the following:
Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and reboot when prompted. Reboot to Normal Mode Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Post the Panda Scan report and a new HijackThis log Let us know if any problems persist. |

Panda Scan Complete, new HJT log post
I have done everything that you said, and I believe that the 'Daily Weather Forecast' thing is now gone. I just remembered something though while the Panda ActiveScan was running - previous scans with Norton had detected a virus called 'Web Hancer' with several ( 6 I think) files that could not be deleted. Since then I've not been able to find a way to get rid of WebHancer so I assume it's still there. Would you be able to help me with this problem as well, or at least tell me if it's even still there?
Below are the logs, and thanks for helping with this. :) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Panda Active Scan: Incident Status Location Virus:Exploit/ByteVerify Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\CCity\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\java.jar-bae16f0-17f84dc4.zip[NewSecurityClassLoader.class] Virus:Exploit/ByteVerify Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\CCity\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\java.jar-bae16f0-17f84dc4.zip[NewURLClassLoader.class] Virus:Exploit/ByteVerify Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\CCity\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\loaderadv661.jar-897c2ff-25f3555c.zip[Dummy.class] Possible Virus. Hi Leafbunk
Please use Symantec's guide to remove the Norton Quarantine files. Click Start > Control Panel double click Java Plug-in select the Cache tab and click Clear Upload this file C:\Documents and Settings\CCity\My Documents\Computer Enhancers\Installation Program Stuff\CD and DVD programs\Alcohol 120%\alcohol 120 serial.ZIP to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and submit it. Wait for the analysis and post it here Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Kaspersky WebScanner Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Post a new HijackThis log along with the Kaspersky results and Jotti analysis. __________________ |

Jotti and Kaspersky results, new HJT log
Sorry it took so long for me to finish what you said to do. I don't have full time access to an internet connection, so finding the time and availability to download what was needed and run the virus scan was somewhat difficult. I think that for those of us who have dial up, it would be helpful if you could include the approximate size of what needs to be downloaded. It was only 7 MB that I had to download, but you wouldn't believe how long it took just to do that.
I removed the quarantine files from Norton, but I noticed after the Kaspersky scan, it reported quarantined files in the results. Norton says there aren't any in there though... But I'll let you analyze the results because that's what you're good at. Also, that Alcohol 120 file mentioned as infected isn't a necessary file for me. I can delete it if needed. That file is just a zip to install the program - which I haven't done - but since I don't need it, just say the word and it's gone. **************************** Here are the results from Jotti: File: alcohol_120_serial.ZIP Status: INFECTED/MALWARE MD5 bea4460c0f5f2b82c4974c68975683cc Packers detected: UPACK Scanner results AntiVir Found nothing ArcaVir Found nothing Avast Found Win32:Trojano-1652 AVG Antivirus Found Downloader.Generic.NSD BitDefender Found nothing ClamAV Found Worm.Mytob.Gen-6 Dr.Web Found nothing F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing Fortinet Found nothing Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found nothing NOD32 Found nothing Norman Virus Control Found W32/Suspicious_U.gen UNA Found nothing VBA32 Found nothing **************************** And the results from Kaspersky: ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------- KASPERSKY ON-LINE SCANNER REPORT Sunday, February 19, 2006 23:44:23 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) Kaspersky On-line Scanner version: 5.0.67.0 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database last update: 20/02/2006 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database records: 166766 ------------------------------------------------------------ Scan Settings: Scan using the following antivirus database: standard Scan Archives: true Scan Mail Bases: true Scan Target - Hi Leafbunk
As a dial up user myself I know how you feel regarding download speeds, this also means I have plenty practice at being patient ![]() How long did it take to download 7mb? Your logs are clean apart from the Norton quarantine and some files in your system restore (we will address this later) Reboot in safe mode (by repeatedly tapping F8 key until the menu appears) The Norton quarantine files are safe where they are, they have been renamed by Norton and pose no threat. If you want to get rid of them then you can navigate to: C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\Portal\ If the files are still there click edit > select all then select file > delete. You will be asked if you are sure you want to delete the selected files, choose yes. I'd definately advise deleting C:\Documents and Settings\CCity\My Documents\Computer Enhancers\Installation Program Stuff\CD and DVD programs\Alcohol 120%\alcohol 120 serial.ZIP This is a crack file which will allow you to use an illegal copy of the Alcohol software. Apart from the legal issues, it is infected with malware as can been seen in Jotti scans results. Reboot in normal mode Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats. It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay. Have a safe & happy computing day. ![]() Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved. |

I much appreciate the help you've offered
Thanks for the help. I wasn't complaining so much as suggesting that the size info be included in the instructions, just so people are aware before they try to download it. And for some reason it took about an hour and a half to download the 7MB. Any other time I've downloaded something of that size, at most it's taken 40-50 mins. I don't know what was up with it taking that long, but...yes, yes, patience is a good thing.
So, I ran Norton again just to see if that Webhancer stuff would show up again and luckily it didn't, so I guess that problem is fixed now. I deleted the Alcohol 120 file completely. I had most of the programs already that you suggested, but I got the ones that I didn't have. And one quick question before everything is said and done - Frequent disconnections from the internet....is that an ISP thing or ...not? |

Yes estimating download times is a good idea but as you have experienced malware can drastically reduce a computer performance therefore it is difficult to be accurate.
Malware can also disconnect you from the internet frequently, however on dial up you will still experience disconnection from time to time caused by various different factors even when your clean. You can set your modem to automatically redial when the connection is dropped. |
