A little help please...

I was seriously hijacked and thoroughly infected with countless viruses, spyware, malware, adware etc... It was a mess, but it was my own fault. I clicked on something I shouldn't have . Fortunately I have a large arsenal of anti-spyware and virus scans at my disposal. It took the better part of an evening to run all these processes (which I will describe in detail) and really got things under control. I'm probably back up to 90% now, but still have a nagging popup problem, which I normally NEVER, EVER have due to good maintenance and two good popup blockers.
I'm running Windows XP Home, 384 RAM, SP1, Pentium 4.
I updated the following software updates online first, then proceeded to actually run them in Safe Mode because the takeover wouldn't allow me to run them online.
First, I ran Ad-Aware SE. Found total (spyware, cookies, etc..) 128 entries deleted.
Second, I ran my service provider's SBC Yahoo Online Protection (a very decent scan) which found maybe 20 entries and deleted.
Then ran Spybot. Approx 16 entries and removed.
Next I ran what is probably the greatest scan I've ever encontered: David Lipman's SmitFraud.exe. This thing is POWERFUL. It found about 30 viruses and over 50 possible spyware, all removed. (Lots of surfside spyware.)
Turned off System Restore temporarily and rebooted to permanently remove everything from Backup Files. Turned Restore back on.
Ran Ad-Aware SE again (14 entries), SBC Yahoo scan (about 15 entries) again, and SmitFraud.exe again (one more spyware entry). All found more nagging spyware.
Also ran Trend Micro scan (approx 15-20 entries), and the new great scan I have on Trial called ewido. Excellent. (Another 20 or so entries.)

Also, during the takeover, various evil software was downloaded to my system.
There are two icons on my desktop yet, but they are not located in Add or Remove Programs. They are:
A colorful interlocking logo icon named MS DOS and the software is named freeprodtb.
The second is called TagASaurus.exe with red logo that says TAG.
There is a third program located in Add or Remove Programs called Uninstall Aze Bar. When I click on Remove, nothing happens.
How do I get rid of this software? regedit perhaps?

I still have some relentless popups that are plaguing me. The title bar usually has ad.firstadsolutions or something along those lines and ad.admarketplace if that's helpful. What do you suggest I use to ultimately get rid of the last of this spyware?

Here is my HijackThis log file. I tried to be as thorough as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Tom

Here are the results.

No button or no dialog appeared to Save results of BFU scan. Sorry.

Disabled ewido.

Ran HijackThis again and deleted the stated files.
Shouldn't this file also be deleted? It wasn't on your list:

Ran KillBox and deleted stated files. C:\WINDOWS\meambcqA.exe was not found and deleted. Strangely enough, a folder named !Submit suddenly appeared in My Computer containing meambcqA.exe! What do you know. I assume I should delete this entire file?

Ran CleanUp.exe and it freed up about a half G of disc space. I regularly run Disc Cleanup and EasyCleaner, but it still freed up a huge amount of space.
I stupidly logged off and restarted after CleanUp scan, despite your instructions. It prompted me to restart to fully delete all files. So sorry.

Ran Kaspersky scan. Not obvious figuring out how to set to Extended Scan Options. Had to go to Help to figure it out.
Here are scan results:
(Obviously I didn't include the thousands of Quarantined and Recovery folder files for Spybot, Adaware, etc...)

Believe it or not, I still have a very slight popup problem. I can't believe it either.

Uninstall Aze Bar is still in Add or Remove Programs, and will not Remove.
MS DOS logo named freeprodtb icon still on desktop.
TagASaurus.exe TAG icon still on desktop.
Doesn't that mean the software still exists??
How about a regedit procedure to remove?

Look forward to your follow-up.
Thank you.

The HJT log you posted appears erronous. Please re-post a fresh copy.

C:\!Submit\ is the backup folder created by Killbox. You may delete that if you wish

Hey

That scan I posted was the Kapersky one you had requested I post to you. That is the full scan I submitted, except for the thousands of Recovery and Backup Files deleted by Ad Aware SE, Spybot and SBC Yahoo Anti-Spy.

Finally deleted Uninstall Aze Bar from Add/Remove Programs with HijackThis "Uninstall Programs" feature.

That !Submit folder contained the meambcqA.exe file which was a Trojan. HijackThis deleted it, also.

New problem is that I keep getting Error Messages when attempting to retrieve updates from both Ad-Aware SE and SBC Yahoo Anti-Spy.
AdAware's states Error retrieving update
SBC Yahoo Anti-Spy's states An error occured during the check for updates [0x4].Any thoughts on this? Need to update for I scan.

Installed Kaspersky as you requested. Every hour or so, its Anti-Hacker feature states someone is trying to hack into my system. It's always from Halkern, whatever that is.

Still have the occasional spyware/popup problem. Still not 100% clean. I sure used to be. Any other suggestions?

Thank you.
Tom B.

Lol..Did you install the trial version of Kaspersky Antivirus Pro? That'll explain why the log looks that way.

Please delete the 2 files that were on your Desktop - freeprodtb icon & TagASaurus.exe
Look into the Program Files directory. If you see a folder called TagASaurus, delete that as well.

May I have a fresh HJT log after that?

I installed the Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 30-day Trial. I missed the link for the Online Scanner. It was late. I was tired. Worked out OK though.
The Anti-Virus scan was helpful.
Am running the Online Scanner right now. Will post those results when finished.

Deleted those icons off desktop. I guess that software isn't installed then. No Tagasaurus folder in Program Files.

Any thoughts on why I can't retrieve updates for either Ad Aware or SBC Anti Spy any more?

Here's current HJT log. Deleted meambcqA file (which contained Trojan) from there and old LEADTOOLS EPrint folder, as well as all the ones you had requested last night.

No need for another Kaspersky online scan. You already have the trial version onboard. Both of them uses the same database.

Please use Panda instead - Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click Scan Now
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

While we wait for Panda's results, you might wanna read up & prepare for the next pass

Right click on this & choose "Save As..." DelO15Domains.inf - DelO15Domains.inf
Right click on DelO15Domains.inf and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete the file afterwards.

Host.zip - From within Host.zip, double click on MVPS.bat & allow it to run.

Right click on this & select 'Save As' - DNSManual.bat
Doubleclick on DNSManual.bat & allow it to run.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items

IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

Will start working on Phase 2 (Panda, Del015Domains.inf, etc...).

The files in the System Volume Information folder are System Restore's cache. They cant do any harm unless you choose to do a restore. We'll clear those when you're full disinfected.

These, however have to be deleted:

C:\WINDOWS\unin101.exe
C:\WINDOWS\uni_eh.exe

Will look forward to hearing from you

Windows

Couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\unin101.exe or C:\WINDOWS\uni_eh.exe with either the Search feature or manually. I even checked in folder options to make sure that Folder Options had Show hidden files and folders checked. They don't show.
After having already ran the original Kaspersky Online Scanner, is it redundant to run the Panda? I've already started it and it's half done.
I can cancel and we can move on to the next phase. It's up to you.

Tom

Allright. That was some genius maintenance. Thanks. You should consider working for the State Dept.
I ran:
DelO15Domains.inf
Host.zip
Installed Spyware Blaster 3.5.1 with recommended settings.
IE Spy AD with settings.
Ran Cleanup! with your settings.
Deleted stated files in HijackThis.

Here's the new HJT log:

I believe I am now officially disinfected. No more popups, scan updates work, ran Trend Micro complete scan and Kaspersky scan just in Windows folder. No trace of:
C:\WINDOWS\unin101.exe
C:\WINDOWS\uni_eh.exe

which Kaspersky Online Scan revealed as Trojan.Win32.VB.tg. Not present.
All clean scans.

OK. So next is eliminating System Volume Information files with Trojans in restore? Here they are.

Your system is clean. Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE - (System Volume Information folder)
Go to Start >> Run - type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter
    • Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
    • Click Apply
Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click OK

  2. DISABLE THE VIEWING OF SYSTEM FILES
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
    • Untick - Show hidden files and folder
    • Tick - Hide file extensions for known types
    • Tick - Hide protected operating system files
Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

  3. SECURING INTERNET EXPLORER
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    • Select the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Select Custom Level .
        • Change 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to Prompt
        • Change 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to Disable
        • Change 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable
        • Change 'Installation of desktop items' to Prompt
        • Change 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to Prompt
        • Change 'Navigate sub-frames across different domains' to Prompt
        • When all these changes have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Select OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  4. ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  5. FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here.

  6. Microsoft Windows Update
Visit windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  7. SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  8. AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • Google Toolbar - Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay.
Have a safe & happy computing day.

Follow-up

Hey again. Thanks again for all your valuable help. Well done!

I believe my system is now infection free. I will initiate the last of those preventive measures when I have the time. Thank you.

One last thing. As of today, since my system has been clean and I installed the measures from last night, everything just seems to be running slower and more sluggish. There's about a second or two delay (or more sometimes) more than usual for every action initiated. Is this due to the presence of the Kaspersky Anti-Virus and the actions taken by Spyware Blaster? Not sure. The longer I'm online past about a half hour, things just seem to get slower and slower.
Any thoughts?

Tom

Unload Kaspersky & Ewido. Let me know if it's still slow.

Big difference...

After uninstalling ewido and Kaspersky Anti-Virus (I kept the Kasp Anti-Hacker and Anti-Spam software. A big suite.), there was a huge difference in response time. That was the problem. Making a trade-off of virus protection for speed doesn't seem quite fair. I should have both. Someday I guess. I want protection, but I just can't tolerate Dial-Up and low RAM type response times. That's what it felt like.
For now, I'll just have to be extra careful about virus prevention. I always had been before. That had never happened to me in the over three years I've had my system. I know what I did and it just wasn't smart.

I will initiate the last of those preventive tips you posted and try to continue being a smart surfer. If it does happen again, I'm even better armed now to take care of it, and definitely know where to go for help.
Just so you know, I had also posted to a forum called Geeks To Go or something like that, and there must have been 10 posts per minute in there! I'm not exxagerating. The next morning I went to check my post and I was already buried on about Page 5 with no response. No kidding. Talk about getting lost in the shuffle. Whereas, in this forum, I was right there and there was already a solid response. This forum kicks a**. Just letting you know.
Later.
Thanks for the help.
