Very interesting you should find that thread as it is mine I did have the problem but it resolved itself then when I restored my PC via Ghost a week ago I got the problem back together with the current IE6 .gif viewing problem. As you can see from the post it went away again and now all is OK as far as useing the FTP program, do not know how it got fixed I can only assume either Telefonica or Buck-Hosting the web server providor did something but it now works 100% ok for file transfer up and down.

You should try to find out from your ISP if they're using a transparent proxy. If so, it may be the proxy that's blocking the advertising images.

Try locating another public proxy that's based in Spain & use that as your designated proxy.

I understand what you are saying but don't know how to do it, and why should I need to find another public proxy when this one used to work. This problem has only happened since I did a ghost restore it always did work.

Trying to talk to somebody from Telefonica is very hard as I do not speak Spanish though my wife does, but they try to tell her all sorts of things which are way above her head as she knows nothing about PC's or the internet and if I ask to speak to somebody in English the just put the phone down it is very frustrating.

Is there anything else you might suggest that could help as you have been very paitent with me so far as I am not very IT minded.

Launch IE & go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections

Select your connection & click Settings

Tick the boxes for:
  • Use a proxy server
  • Bypass proxy server for local addresses
Address :- 80.59.28.77 Port:- 80

Try it & see if it's any better

Man YOU ARE A STAR what more can I say but thank you for all your time and effort you gave to my problem it works great. I would never of thought I went via a proxy server but you live and learn.

I have now made a not of the correct setup and I and about to do a full Ghost backup.

I wounder if that was the problem with not being ablt to access my web site via ws-ftp pro, net time I get the problem I will give it some thought, will not play with it now as it is working 100 % ok.

Once again many thanks for your time and trouble.

The proxy address I gave you may not last forever.

In the event that happens, you should be able to find a new one by googling these keywords:
  • Public proxy +Spain
Shall we consider this thread as resolved?

Thanks for all your help can I just check 1 more thing please.

With the setting you gave me Address :- 80.59.28.77 Port:- 80 everything worked fine but I found I coudl not connect to MSN Messanger, to solve this I removed the address from the standard proxy server box in Tools > Internet Options > Connections and went into the advance section and just left it in for HTTP. This seems to allow me to be able to see all .gif pictures and also sign into MSN Massanger, is this the correct way or should I do it another way.

Yes, that should be okay.

Earlier on, I disabled some of your protection when we were testing. Now that we're done, we should bolster it. This will ensure that your protection is not compromised.

Please download the following:

Host.zip - From within Host.zip, double click on MVPS.bat & allow it to run.

Right click on this & select 'Save As' - DNSManual.bat
Doubleclick on DNSManual.bat & allow it to run.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items

IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

Please let me know if you experienced any difficulties carrying out the above instructions.

Ok order of operation as follows

1) Run Mups.bat but did not see anything on the screen it was to fast. is this correct?

2) Run DNS.bat and got the following message Controlservices Failed 1062 is this correct?

3) Installed Spywareblaster updated latest definitions, enabled ALL Protection from main screen protection section.

4) Installed ie-spyad and did operations 2 & 4 as requested.

Is there anything else that needs to be done to give me maximum protection from virus and trogens etc other than the AV program I am running.

Unless mistaken, error 1062 indictae that DNS services is disabled/stopped.

Let's verify it.. Go to Start > Run - type services.msc
In the right pane, scroll down till you see DNS client.
D/click on it & check if it's startup type = disabled/manual.
If that's so, then it's okay

I have checked it and it is set to manual which as you say is ok then.

Here are some further tips for safe guarding your machine
  1. SECURING INTERNET EXPLORER
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    • Select the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Select Custom Level .
        • Change 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to Prompt
        • Change 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to Disable
        • Change 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable
        • Change 'Installation of desktop items' to Prompt
        • Change 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to Prompt
        • Change 'Navigate sub-frames across different domains' to Prompt
        • When all these changes have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Select OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  2. ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  3. FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here.

  4. Microsoft Windows Update
Visit windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  5. SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  6. AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • Google Toolbar - Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay.
Have a safe & happy computing day.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Thanks for the extra info. I have reset IE Security as you suggested. I do use SpyBot Search & Destroy but without the teatime part as I also run Counterspy do you think I should run the teatime part as well.
I use AVG Free for my anti virus and windows and my firewall, I have to be very carefull what I run as I use Skype and a lot of programs give problems with it. Do you think I need AD-AWARE as well considering the programes I have on at the moment, if you advise yes then I will do it but I dont like to clutter my PC up to much.

I have all the latest microsoft security updated through auto updates set to ON

Since you have CounterSpy, I would not use TeaTimer.

Install adaware but run it periodically. Counterspy & Spybot doesn't get everything. Adaware should find any leftovers. It doesnt take up any of your resources unless you run it. Best of all, it's free. :)
