I hope you can help.
I recently downloaded an .exe file through MSN Messenger. Very stupid, I know. My firewall (Zone Alarm) warned me a few times but I was so sure it was trustworthy I proceeded. The program is called “services.exe” and it installed itself in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\service\services.exe I knew something was wrong was because when it was installing everything started running too slow and then my contacts in MSN messenger started getting “from me” the same link to the file download I had originally got. I have since uninstalled Messenger. I must say the virus, or whatever it is, doesn’t seem to have affected other programs in my computer. I have followed all the steps to remove malware as per the instructions on your website. None of the tools found any viruses, trojans etc. Apart from the tools listed in your instructions, I have also run Norton Antivirus, which I checked for updates. It didn’t detect anything. I tried to update my operating system (XP) but it seemed to be up to date. There were no critical updates to be done. I tried downloading SP1a, but got the following message: Setup has detected that the service pack version of the system installed is newer than the update you are applying to it. Here is my log file. Thanks in advance for your help: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 16:15:47, on 10/01/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\S24EvMon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\PCFort\PCFortService.exe C:\Program Files\PCFort\PCFstage1.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RegSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\Program Files\PCFort\PCFstage2.exe C:\Program Files\PCFort\PCFstage3.exe C:\Program Files\PCFort\PCFstage4.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZCfgSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apntex.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\NCS\PROSet\PRONoMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\AOLSPY~1\AOLSP Scheduler.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LVCOMSX.EXE C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\LogiTray.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\FxSvr2.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\AOL 9.0\aoltray.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\Sony Corporation\Picture Package\Picture Package Menu\SonyTray.exe C:\Program Files\Sony Corporation\Picture Package\Picture Package Applications\Residence.exe C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE C:\Program Files\PCFort\PCFortGUI.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R1 - Kaspersky didnt find anything worrying in your machine.
You may delete the file: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\BTOW Shared Files\btwebcontrol.dll This would empty the System Volume Information folder)[/color] Go to Start >> Run - type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter
Do you have anymore problems? Or should we consider this case resolved?

Thank you! Yes, I guess this is resolved. I think it's strange it didn't detect anything though. Maybe it's because when I was panicking I deleted it manually...? I knew it was there because I saw it my firewall log.
Well, I'll download Messenger again and hopefully won't have any problems. Thanks again. |
