Normal file error message in Word - thinking Spyware

hi folks, I have a workstation that has an error when she opens a word file and the message of file not available comes up. Then upon trying to close word it says "the file normal has been changed, do you want to save the changes."

Looking through the Office forum the suggestion of running hijack this came up before doing anything else. So here it is:

Hello and Welcome. That's just Microsoft Word telling you that the global template - Normal.dot have had it's settings changed & is asking if you would like to save the new settings. Nothing to worry about.

Download & install - CleanUp.exe (not recommended for WinXP64)

'UNPLUG'/DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet when you have finished downlaoding.

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider initially to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:

Delete Newsgroup cache
Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
Scan local drives for temporary files

4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
6. Do NOT reboot/logoff if prompted.

* CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  - Extended
- Scan Options:
  - Scan Archives
  - Scan Mail Bases
Click OK & have it scan My Computer
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Hi Subs,

I did the hijack this log which I'll post below. Did the cleanup twice and it worked fine.

I then tried a word doc, and is still says "file unavailable" with any word file that I try to open, and then gives the normal file error.

Kaspersky failed to run, here's the message: (the user account I have is administrator, and security is set to Medium)
Failed to load Kaspersky On-line Scanner ActiveX control!

You must have administrative rights on this computer;
you also must have the IE security settings to the Medium level.

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer

If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.

Unfortunately Pandasoft uses activeX the same way that Kaspersky does, so it didn't run

Please download & install the trial version of Kaspersky Personal Pro
Have it update it's virus definitions & then exit the program.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
Restart your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

Do a full system scan & have Kaspersky disinfect all that it finds.

Let me know how that went.

## Please disable McAfee before doing this. We do not want 2 antivirus programs running on the same machine as this produces undesirable conflicts

Kaperski came back with nothing. Interestingly when I turned it back on I forgot safe mode and it came up with the sasser type windows box saying that your computer will shut down in 60 seconds, status code 1073741819

It appears that you're clean.

I suggest you invoke Word's self-repair facilty to replace any corrupt files. It can be accessed through the program itself by going to the Help menu & selecting "Detect & repair".

Did the cleanup twice and it worked fine. I then tried a word doc, and is still says "file unavailable" with any word file that I try to open, and then gives the normal file error. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. Restart your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter. Do a full system scan & have Kaspersky disinfect all that it finds. Let me know how that went. ## Please disable McAfee before doing this. I suggest you invoke Word's self-repair facilty to replace any corrupt files. It can be accessed through the program itself by going to the Help menu & selecting "Detect & repair". Interestingly when I turned it back on I forgot safe mode and it came up with the sasser type windows box saying that your computer will shut down in 60 seconds, status code 1073741819
