VCODEC Virus keeps reappearing
After receiving an alert concerning a virus I began to run my virus program "Symantec Anti-Virus" and "Spybot" I found Trojan viruses and VCODEC would return after I ran the virus programs. I also ran them in "Safe" mode. I would run them twice to be sure I got everything but as soon as I rebooted I would receive the same viruses back on my computer. I installed Ad-Aware and ran that and went thru the same process only to have the problem persist. My desktop keeps getting "SpyAxe" and "SpywareStrike" Icons, as well as "On-Line Security Guide" and "Security Troubleshooting" icons. I have deleted all of these from my desktop and from the add/remove program in the control panel. I ran the "Hijacked by" Antivirus and have attached the text below. I ran this program when I first got it installed, then again after running the antivirus programs in safe mode and again after I rebooted. I am now plagued with pop-ups and security messages and when I try to go to my home page I get redirected to a security alert page even though my home page has it's original setting and has not been replaced.
I appreciate any help you can give. Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted.
Before we do anything else, please ensure that you have already patch your system against the recent WMF exploit. Please refer to my sig. No point we fix anything only for it to return tomorrow. Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. * * * * * * ADDITIONAL DOWNLOADS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Download & install - CleanUp.exe (not recommended for WinXP64) Download & extract it to it's own folder - smitRem.exe Please download & Save on desktop - regdel.zip. We shall be needing it in Safe Mode Download and install Ewido Security Suite
If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, download and update aawsepersonal.exe 'UNPLUG'/DISCONNECT your computer from the Internet when you have finished downlaoding. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order. * * * * * * FIXING ENTRIES WITH HIJACKTHIS * * * * * * * * * * Do a HijackThis scan & place a check next to these items and select "Fix checked": F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell= O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {27150f81-0877-42e9-af13-55e5a3439a26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpB61.tmp O2 - BHO: CM BHO - {6379A99A-9102-446C-A837-0623E1810D75} - C:\Program Files\Crystalys media\cm.dll O3 - Toolbar: MSN - {BDAD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - C:\Program Files\MSN Apps\MSN Toolbar\01.02.3000.1001\en-us\msntb.dll (file missing) O3 - Toolbar: CM Band - {159C2E51-9823-11D2-8DDC-D84A1B4ACD4D} - C:\Program Files\Crystalys media\cm.dll O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} - * * * * * * USING HIJACKTHIS' DELETE ON REBOOT * * * * * * Start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools> Delete a file on reboot...

Click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
3. Click Start 4. Choose - Perform Full System Scan 5. DeSelect "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat. 6. Click Next and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically. 7. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window 8. Right-click on the list and choose Select All 9. Click Next to finish removing the items that were found * * * * * Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
** Ewido scan would require at least an hour. I suggest that you go grab a cup of coffee & do something else while you wait for it to complete. * * * * Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. * * * * From within regdel.zip, doubleclick regdel.reg & allow it to merge with the Registry This will remove some malware entries from the Registry * * * * Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Website Under the 'Web pages' box, Uncheck everything present. * * * * * * REBOOT TO NORMAL MODE * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

I found a spyaxe icon on my desktop
After I ran thru the process you posted I found a Spyaxe icon on my desktop. I sent it to the recycle bin. It said it was just a shortcut but I could not find it in my control panel - add/remove options. I ran the online scan of my computer. I thought I had saved the file but when I went to retrieve it for posting here I could not find it. It did say there were no viruses/malware found. I've posted the rest here.
I could not find the files I was instructed to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpB61.tmp C:\Program Files\Crystalys media\ C:\Program Files\SpywareStrike I used explorer to locate them and was unable to locate them. Have you done the Kaspersky online scan yet?
Please post a fresh HJT log. Let me know if you still have other issues.

HijackThis reveals many things but it does not see all. Without seeing the results from the Kaspersky scan, I cannot declare you as clean.

You should remove the infected files from Symantec's quarantine folder. Please use Symantec's guide to remove them.
Your system is clean. Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats. It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay. Have a safe & happy computing day. ![]() Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
