Lose Browser Connection
ISSUE:
I lose internet connectivity with my browsers (IE & FireFox) without warning - happens at all times of the day (mostly during business hours - less at night). Email operations (check adn send via Outlook Express) still works but the browsers fail. Reboot eliminates the problem but it reappears later. It is not related to any specific web site (will happen at Cnet, CNN, ESPN, etc.). Any ideas what to do? Thanks in advance for the help! ACTION: I've followed all the instructions in the sticky thread - have run numerous virus scans (Norton, Bitdefender, etc.), ad-aware, spy-bot, etc. Looks like everythat that could be troubling is gone but the problem persists. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/. 1. Install Ewido Security Suite. 2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck: * Install background guard * Install scan via context menu 3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it. 4. The program will now open to the main screen. 5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment. 6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. * On the left hand side of the main screen click update. * Then click on Start Update. 7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'. 8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet. If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet. Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=61 ). CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff. Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system. * Click on scanner. * Click on 'Complete System Scan' and the scan will begin. * While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose 'Remove', then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK. Exit Ewido when it's done. * Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named 'Save report'. * Click 'Save report'. * Save the report to your desktop. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us10.hpwis.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us10.hpwis.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us10.hpwis.com/ O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file) O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot Uninstall Spyware Cleaner via the Add/Remove panel. Locate and delete the following: C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\ Restart your computer to get back to Normal Mode. Post the Ewido report and a new HijackThis log here. Any better now?

Just one question before I proceed...
I just want to clairfy one thing before I proceed with the fixes you suggest.
You say: "Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:" - Does this mean I should make sure each in that list have been REMOVED? - not sure what I'm supposed to do with that list. Everything else seems clear to me - thanks for the help! |

You don't need to fix HJT entries twice. Just do it once. If it returns in the next log, we'll deal with it

Looks Better Now!
Wow - thanks for the help - worked all day and the browsers didn't lock up once! I'll keep you posted here if it recurs to see if I can isolate the cause.
Cleanup removed more than 200MB of files - must have really needed the cleanup. I thought using the IE mechanism (tools>InternetOptions) was enough - apparently not... Anyway, greatly appreciate the help. I'll make a donation to keep the effort moving forward - this is a great service! As requested, here are the logs - I'll check back to see if there's anything more you think I should do. ============= EWIDO ============= --------------------------------------------------------- ewido anti-malware - The HJt log you posted was taken from Safe Mode. That does not reflect the true state of affairs within your machine. Please ensure all future HJT logs are taken from Normal Mode.

Post the contents of the report in your next reply along with a new HJT log *You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report. *Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

More Progress...
Okay - this seems to be helping very much. I did the HJT scan in regular mode this time. Several of the HJT entries you suggested I fix did not appear in the list this time.
I really appreciate your help! Panda didnt find much. Just mere cookies. Cant really be considered a security threat. More of a privacy thingy. You may delete them if you wish

Like A New Machine...
I make the deletions you suggested - everything is much better. I haven't observed the browser lose the connection today at all (a major step forward).
The browser windows close very quickly (it used to take a few seconds for the refresh to close them - now it happens alsmot instantly!). Also, the boot and shut-down cycles are much more quick. It's a great improvment - your help is much appreciated. As I said before, I'll make a donation but, even with that, I can't tell you how grateful I am. You did great! Best regards, - Jeff |

Your system is clean. Have you patched yourself against the WMF exploit yet? If not, please refer to my sig. Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats. It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay. Have a safe & happy computing day. ![]() Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

All done!
Well, I've worked my way through your list. Everything is checked, evaluated, and installed. I'm confident I'm much more safe now - this has been a real learning experience for all of us here (me and those looking over my shoulder).
This house is clean! Thanks for the help - you can mark this thread 'resolved.' Best regards, - Jeff |
